New show dates announced! Get those tickets 💙 ‘Mourning is a Muscle’ coming to @carlow_arts_festival 30 May - 1 June (3pm & 6pm each day). Info link in bio. In still shock of the 2020 London lockdown, Barry began writing letters to their father. He had died four years earlier. A simple mourning ritual grew and allowed Barry to move again. Mourning is a Muscle is the culmination of those letters, a denim-drenched journey through grief, connection, queerness, and lineage - part performance, part installation. Focusing on the relationship of a father and queer child, and a story of a derelict farm, it fuses movement, music, design and ritual. Playfully delving into gender, how we carry the landscape of home, and the joy of moving as our true selves. From Annie Lennox to Neil Diamond, Carlow fields to London lockdown, line dancing to lip-syncing - it moves across time and place, landing in tender and electric moments. A call to witness mourning in all its forms: spectacular, ordinary, and everything in between. More shows just dropped for Carlow Arts Festival 2026 🎉   Introducing the latest additions to this year’s programme:   Carlow native Barry Fitzgerald is returning with Mourning is a Muscle, a work he first developed with the festival in 2024. Discover the immersive installation of Our Place, developed with attendees of Delta Centre Day Service and led by people with an intellectual disability, exploring their human rights and personal stories. Kristyn Fontanella recalls and reclaims the lost traditions of the travelling dance masters with Miss Mary and on Saturday night, we welcome the genre defying whirlwind music of Aindrias de Staic and The Latchikos back to Carlow Arts Festival.   We’re proud to continue our commitment to making the arts accessible, with the majority of festival events free for everyone to enjoy. That said, some performances are ticketed, and they won’t hang around for long… 👀 Be sure to book tickets for Mourning is a Muscle while you can!    And don’t forget — tickets are already on sale for: 🎟️ A Teen Odyssey 🎟️ Camille O’Sullivan’s Loveletter   Grab your tickets, plan your festival, and get ready for an unforgettable Carlow Arts Festival 2026. Over a third of the way through my time here in Paris ✨ On residency at the wonderful @centreculturelirlandais , alongside a stellar group of artists. Researching new work, in part inspired by my great-aunt Betty, who lived here for many years. Those who know me will know how truly special she was, both to me and to all who knew her ❤️

So exciting to see this in print! - my chapter in the new ‘Stanislavsky and Gender’ book by Routledge ✨ Huge thanks to Mark Shields for editing, supporting & inviting me in the first place! A real honour to present alongside contributors Maria Ignatieva, Samia La Virgne, Bella Merlin, Maria Brígida De Miranda, Lisa Peck, Peta Tait, Rose Whyman & Spencer Wood. Following my chapter is a conversation with the incredible @rachaelraymck , where we discuss our experiences of training & making work as queer artists. I reflect on my experiences from performing in rural Ireland to teaching at London drama schools, and working on projects like ‘And the Rest of Me Floats’ by @outboxtheatre and ‘TransActing’ started by @genderedintelligence @mygenderation @profcatherinemcnamara @cssdlondon I explore my evolving practice, how we might challenge cis-centered, heteronormative traditions in training spaces, and how embracing queer, trans and non-binary experiences can enrich our understanding of gender for all. As I write in my chapter: ‘It is part of my attempt towards a ‘slippery pedagogy’ that remains open and fluid. This pedagogy is invested in the sensual and visceral experience of being human. It is delicate and something to be held with care; if grasped too firmly, it may slip right out of the hand.’
