We are looking for YOU! 🫵 🌊 Please read before applying: We are currently only looking for applicants with at least intermediate sailing experience and offshore confidence. Additional skills such as photography, videography, storytelling, science, research, or media are highly welcome onboard. S.V. Barba is heading to Greenland this summer - throughout July, August & September - on a marine conservation expedition documenting life at sea, remote coastlines, and the realities of a changing ocean. We are looking for sailors, storytellers, scientists who don’t just want to watch - but contribute. People who are hands-on, curious, and ready to be part of something bigger than a trip. This isn’t a cruise. It’s early mornings, cold water, long days, and real responsibility. Not passengers. Crew. If you’ve got a skill, a perspective, or a story to tell - we want to hear it. Apply via the link in bio 📍 📸🙌 @stefan_leitner @kurtarrigo @byritaalmeida @conormcdphoto @amelieconty @sophiebolesworth @tordkarlsen

Sir David Attenborough turns 100 today 🙏 Having @davidattenborough narrate a documentary featuring @Barbaboat herself is one of our absolute highlights to date — and he has been one of the biggest inspirations for us in the Barba team. He has not only shaped how we see the natural world, but shown us how much one person can achieve through hard work, persistence and passion. The clip is from “Whale Wisdom”, produced by Katya Shirokow and directed by @rickosenthal . It was on this shoot we first met cinematographer @mark.romanov who has since joined us on many an expedition. Happy 100th, Sir David. 🐋 #Attenborough100 #DavidAttenborough100

I document ocean life on their terms. No tours, no chasing animals by fast boat. Just waiting for the right moment. When @barbaboat was returning from a mission up north, they passed Bleik Canyon. It was a chance I couldn’t miss. Motors off, sails up, no noise. Just gliding through the waves. Deployed. Swimming slowly in the same direction as the whales. The encounters were magical. No hasty diving down from engine noise. Instead, playful, curious approaches. Circling back, rolling over, clicking and having fun. Not me, the whales 😁. That never happens from a speeding boat. Seven days at sea. Only one hour in the water - with magic. I love my job. The sperm whales of Bleik Canyon are a distinct population of males living in a deep submarine canyon off Andøya, Vesterålen, one of the few places in the world where deep-sea giants can be seen close to land. Soon I’ll post a video of a giant sperm whale came talking to me, and dancing. Captured from @barbaboat with crew @johneikcaffery , @Anikkam._ , @emilyjthorp and skipper @andreas.b.heide I have traveled the Norwegian coast over the last few years to document the good, the bad, and the ugly. The sperm whale! 🐳 On countless occasions we have stopped in Bleik, Andenes, whilst transiting the Norwegian coast. In addition to stunning scenery, it’s home to sperm whales that feed in the depths of the Bleik Canyon. It’s a place where weather dictates, especially in winter, when visibility is at its best. For years we have tried to get good underwater stills of these enigmatic giants. Last year, we brought a secret weapon for the task: @aleksandernordahl ! To be continued shortly… 📸: 1, 6&7 @tordkarlsen 3&4 @psinst 2&5 @sophiebolesworth 8 @andreas.b.heide #diving #whale #spermwhale #norway #barbaboat

In just one week, we’re setting sail for A Day of Exploration at @yachtclubmonaco . We’ll be joined by ocean icons, top storytellers, and voices from the EC50: Arzucan Askin, Daniel Cáceres Bartra, and Andreas B. Heide Arzucan Askin is a NatGeo Explorer conservation scientist and underwater photographer who has dedicated her life to the ocean’s most threatened giants. Her work combines advanced technologies, field research and systems-thinking to uncover the hidden lives of endangered species. She is the Co-Founder of shark research NGO Miyaru in the Maldives and Anthroposea, a multimedia studio documenting human relationships with marine megafauna. Daniel Cáceres Bartra is the Hispanoamerica representative for Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA) and a marine biologist. In 2017, he established SOA Perú, the first international SOA hub and the largest youth ocean leadership network in the Hispanoamerica region. Andreas B. Heide is a marine biologist and sailor using his Arctic sailing vessel, Barba, as a platform for scientific collaboration and storytelling. Through the Barba project, he creates impactful content across film, digital media, and immersive formats, aiming to inspire ocean stewardship and connect international audiences with the challenges and beauty of the marine world. Stay tuned for more information about these incredible explorers next week 📸: Tord Karlsen, Arzucan Askin, @cientifica_sur , Aleksander Nordahl

Sail training: putting crew, boat, and gear to the test in below-freezing conditions. 100 nautical miles over 3 days — to the offshore island of Utsira, then back to Stavanger via Haugesund. It’s all part of the continuous process of keeping @barbaoat team fit for the fight. This summer, team plans to sail to an island a bit farther to the west, where walrus and polar bears reside. The walrus — closely related to seals — with two enlarged tusks for adapted for the harsh arctic conditions. Despite its docile behaviour, it’s one of the animals we fear encountering while diving. Some large males are known to kill seals and feed on the blubber of the carcass. Walruses have also been known to attack divers in the water. Still, it remains one of our favourite animals in the Arctic (along with polar bears, blue whales, beluga whales, sperm whales and many more 😁). The photos were captured in Svalbard by @antoine_drancey . The underwater footage was secured using an ROV for safety reasons. As for the walrus, the last time we got to see them from SV Barba, was in 2023. Maybe time to go sailing again this summer.. 🤔 #Arctic #ArcticWildlife #WildlifePhotography #MarineLife

Honored to be named one of the EC50: Fifty People Changing the World 🌍 Exploration has always been part of who I am, but over time it’s also become a responsibility: to share my love for the ocean and help communicate why it matters to all of us 🌊 While this recognition is personal, it truly reflects the many incredible people who’ve supported the @barbaboat over the years - onboard and ashore. Huge thanks to @the_explorers_club for the recognition. It’s deeply motivating to continue this journey with the support of such an inspiring global community. You can explore the full EC50 community (Class of 2026) and find my profile at 50.explorers.org ✨link in bio. #EC50 #ExplorersClub #OceanExploration #Science #Conservation BarbaProject ClassOf2026 📸 @aleksandernordahl

Tips in the caption ↓   Our ambassador Andreas B. Heide is a professional sailor, marine biologist and founder of S.V. Barba. With a background as a military diver and naval officer, an MSc in Marine Biology and years spent working with and for the ocean, he brings a rare depth of knowledge to sailing in challenging conditions.   Here are his key tips for navigating the night while sailing:   • Head torches should default to red light so your night vision stays fully protected.   • Build trust in your radar during daylight hours so it becomes second nature to rely on it at night.   • Spreader lights can be a powerful tool for illuminating tight passages or adjusting sails when visibility is low.   • Red light is essential both in the cockpit and below deck to help you stay adapted to the darkness.   • Thermal binoculars can make it significantly easier to identify vessels or hazards at a distance.   • Keeping watch rotations consistent is one of the most effective ways to reduce fatigue through the night.   • Embrace the night, as it becomes surprisingly enjoyable once you get used to it.   #HenriLloyd #NightSailing  #SailingTips #ExploreResponsibly #Marinebiology
