Four years ago, World Earth Day 2022, I stood on a @tedx_official stage for @tedxbrighton and talked about the importance of the circular economy and we should be focusing on how to create a circular, waste-free world NOT #netzero. At the time I feel some people got it but a lot of people didn’t. Every year that passes, it becomes more obvious to me that the #circulareconomy is the most important goal for us to be working towards for us to create a sustainable future for our children’s generations! We are still operating mostly in a linear system. Take from the earth, make what we need, dispose incorrectly. Raw materials are extracted, turned into products, used once, and discarded with no systems in place to recover, repurpose or regenerate. More and more of the consequences are being highlighted to be impacting human health. More and more research (studies listed below in comments) is directly linking plastics and phthalates (the chemicals used to make them) to hormone disruption, declining fertility, and long term health impacts that we are only beginning to understand. This is where we need to put redesigning the entire system so that waste is designed out from the beginning at the forefront of decision making. It is the only credible framework we have for living sustainably across generations. I said it in 2022. I’ll keep saying it until the systems catch up.

Have you seen the Netflix documentary Plastic Detox @unplasticyourlife , which shines a light on the work of Dr Shanna Swan, a reproductive epidemiologist who has now had a Netflix documentary highlighting her research but should be getting a lot more attention than it is. Sperm counts in men have dropped by more than 50% over the last 40 years. Her research points to phthalates, the chemicals found in plastics, as a significant contributing factor. We are ingesting plastic in various ways from the food we ate, to the water we drink to the air we breathe and these phthalates are affecting our hormones. Here our founder @tommie.travels is, on a panel at Planted Community talking about exactly this back in 2022 This is about human health.
