Back2soilbasics invites you for a soil sunday session in Ghent around shea butter, from leaves to butter Maimouna Kanté will guide us through the African Herstories around Shea Butter. Register at the link in our bio 🔗
@maimounakante is an agroecologist researcher and oral storyteller whose work explores the deep connections between plants, people, and African heritages. Born in Bamako, Mali, her life has been shaped by years of living and traveling across Africa. Her practice blends visual art with oral storytelling, most notably through her podcast
@nafolo , where she traces the journeys of seeds and their stewards across landscapes, history, and imagination.
This workshop traces the life of shea butter, following its journey from the hands of the women who craft it to the bodies and rituals of those who use it. Moving across landscapes from West to East Africa, we explore shea as more than a beauty staple: as food, as medicine, as inheritance, and as an indigenous tree rooted in complex herstories.
Through guided conversation and shared experience, we ask: how did shea butter become one of the world’s most desired products, and who truly benefits from its global reach? What stories, labor, and knowledge are carried within each jar?
Together, we exchange personal relationships with shea butter, touching, smelling, remembering, and learning from one another while honoring the communities that have sustained this practice for generations.
