FOMO Killer VII: Fire Dance With Me, a Tribute to David Lynch.
This black, white, and red masquerade ball was our most creatively ambitious and creatively successful FOMO Killer to date. And, it was so joyful to produce over the course of a month. So many friends collaborated and contributed to bring my big vision to life. There is a lot of storytelling to this one, which Iâll be sharing right here in the coming weeks.
A few big big big thank yous to kick us off:
My FOMO Killer forever co-producer and explosively talented resident DJ @mfrederickson
This yearâs exceptionally tolerant venue host @troutshark
The ingenious architect of the Black Lodge and our build lead Ian Morales
The re-creator of the One Eyed Jackâs sign to a T and the originator of the playing card wallpaper @ekparkinson
Our amateur but pretty damn good sign letterer @thetenthousandthings
Our resident mixologist @true_spokes
Invaluable setup assistants @melissacetlin@brickersthorn
Invitation scribes @mickay_rae@educatedcat@megankaparf@hannah_d_n
Expert photographer videographer @maartist
Sit back and tune it. Lots more to come. đđâ ď¸ đ¤ âŚď¸
All these months later, you may still be asking yourself
How *did* they recreate the Black Lodge floor from Twin Peaks for FOMO Killer?
WellâŚ
First, all credit to Ian Morales the ingenious brains of the operation. I was merely the braun.
To begin, Ian designed a *CUSTOM STENCIL* of the iconic Black Lodge chevron pattern. Then, we built the stencil.
Then, we painted 9 giant plywood boards white.
Then, we spray painted the chevron pattern onto the boards.
Then, we installed the finished panels in @troutshark âs living room.
And then?
We partied.

Candlelight and champagne coupes and chartreuse and a baby grand.

@oaklandgleaners really really wantsâŚyour extra fruit! đđđ
Volunteers pick your excess fruit and deliver them to food and mutual aid groups across the East Bay.
Def. Gleaning: to gather small amounts of (grain or the like) left behind after a harvest, nowadays often for charitable use.
And, if youâre a computer gremlin longing for some tactility in your lifeâŚharvesting with Oakland Gleaners is a real refreshing way to spend some weekend hours.

All my productions are as magnificent as they are because of collaboration. Itâs not just that I couldnât do it alone â and I certainly couldnât â itâs also that one of the greatest joys and satisfactions of my creative practice is tapping in people I care about to lend their particular genius to the cause.
Sometimes guests wonder how I get collaborators to dive into these projects.
I ask.
In the case of this New Yearâs Midnight SoirĂŠe, i asked @gill_city and @hendograph , both old and cherished friends from our salad days at Brown.
Both live in New York and both allowed me
to cajole them out to the West Coast to participate. I recruited Jack originally for his talent as a pianist. When I conceived of a glamorous 1930s-inspired fĂŞte, I couldnât imagine it without classics by Gershwin and Porter and Berlin wafting through the party, emanating from a magnificent baby grand (which I do not know the first thing about playing.)
Henderson is a culinary aesthete par excellence. He loves making food with exceptional technique for the pure pleasure of refining his craft. Having cooked together over the years, I knew I wanted him to be part of this ambitious food-forward production. Jack also happens to be top-notch chef who loves cooking showstoppers. So, lucky me, I had not one but two co-chefs de cuisine.
Make the ask. People say yes more often than you think. It turns out, everyone is just waiting to be invited.
Completed my first pick with @oaklandgleaners today. We harvested 160 lbs of oranges! It was immediate and tactile and redolent of citrus aroma. If you have a fruiting tree with more produce than you can eat, get in touch with them and theyâll send volunteers to harvest it for you. All fruit goes to mutual aid projects in the East Bay.
How do you get your guests to dress with magical cohesion?
State your vision clearly in the invitation.
Show them what you mean with a Pinterest board.
Watch them wow you.
Set the bar high. Theyâll rise to meet it.

thank you for coming to this wedding we are now going to do a cat pagan witch coven hope you like it but honestly donât care if you donât you shall be, in a word, subjected to this.
Tooling around solo at sunset I heard music that made every cell in my body say YES and arch extrovert that I am somehow I still got shy about stopping to dance alone but heard the Playa paging me in the lyrics and persuaded myself to get off my bike and start moving and then I was ecstatic and someone saw it and took this video. Say yes.
Well, what we thought was just an East Coast engagement party added to the backend of a family reunion turned out to be pretty much a full-blown wedding in the yard of the house where Graham grew up. It was the backyard wedding (and balloon arch) of our dreams that we didnât realize we wanted. Grahamâs oldest sister Devon @devondaleyb is a sorceress. She made every detail beyond beautiful and personal. Wow, she đď¸ đď¸s us. Grahamâs mom Kathy @kathykbarnhart hosted it all and welcomed in the entire giant Kincaid family to celebrate us at her home. Grahamâs best friend pre-married us, and all his nieces and nephews walked us down the aisle. The pictures look professional because Grahamâs sister Drew @drew.conklin is such a good photographer. They have warm nights here. There were fireflies. The only word for entire affair â dreamy. So I guess one down, two to go? Next stop: playa wedding )â(
