He didnât set out to start a speaker company. He just wanted to hear his records the right way.
After years collecting and restoring vintage sound systems, building gear for friends, and working the line in some of Montrealâs busiest restaurants, Denis Mospanov realized the thing he was looking for didnât exist. So he made it.
From a workshop in a Saint-Henri warehouse, Mospanov is quietly changing how this city listens. His company, @automatic.audio , makes custom speakers by handâdesigned for emotion, not status.
âSomewhere along the way, sound became a status symbol,â he says. âNot a shared experience.â
This isnât about specs. Itâs about presenceâthe kind that fills a room at the right volume and makes you hear a song youâve played a hundred times before like itâs the first.

In the world of high-fidelity (hi-fi) audio, design is not just about aesthetics; it is an essential element that enhances both function and form. While established brands have long dominated the landscape of hi-fi systems, a new wave of independent makers is emerging, creating audio equipment that not only delivers exceptional sound quality but also incorporates striking, well-proportioned design. These creators prioritize the harmony between sound and style, proving that high-performance audio systems can be as much about visual elegance as they are about acoustic precision.
Independently crafted hi-fi audio systems often stand out for their attention to detail and innovation. Free from the constraints of mass production, these smaller makers can experiment with materials, shapes, and finishes in ways that larger brands may avoid. This results in products that feel more personal, with designs that reflect a deep understanding of acoustics and aesthetics. Wood, metal, and even glass are used creatively to craft pieces that resonate with the space they inhabit, both acoustically and visually.
The importance of design proportion in hi-fi audio systems cannot be overstated. For these independent makers, itâs not just about delivering the best sound â itâs about creating an immersive experience that engages all the senses. Speakers are crafted to achieve perfect symmetry, amplifiers are minimal yet striking, and turntables exude a sense of balance and proportion that mirrors the sophistication of the sound they produce. This fusion of art and engineering speaks to a refined consumer who values both the auditory and visual experience.
Hi-fi audio systems from independent makers often feature modular designs that cater to audiophiles who enjoy customizing and upgrading their setups. Brands like Kanto, Auris Audio, and DeVore Fidelity are known for their beautifully crafted, minimalist systems that seamlessly integrate into modern interiors. Their attention to craftsmanship ensures that each piece is both a visual statement and a sonic powerhouse.
