It is always special to be able to spend time with the children at @greatormondst , their families and the incredible staff and volunteers who work there. This week I had the great honour of attending the Breaking Ground ceremony with @therealjasonisaacs for their new Children’s Cancer Centre. The CCC will drive transformation in children’s cancer care and save more lives. Cancer is the biggest killer of children aged one to 14 in the UK, with five children being diagnosed every single day. In the UK, the number of children with cancer has grown by 13% since the early 2000s and children aged under five make up almost half of all cases of children’s cancer in the UK. The new facility will have new inpatient wards, intensive care units, new operating theatres and a cancer day care centre where children can receive their chemotherapy treatment, meaning the hospital’s specialist teams can all work more closely together in the same part of the campus. The Children’s Cancer Centre will also feature a new hospital school and outdoor spaces including a roof garden, where they can safely spend time outdoors despite being in the centre of a large city. Time outdoors is so important for their recovery and mental health and to let them to still be children, not just patients, while going through their treatment.  I’m excited for the future of this incredible project and it was a pleasure to meet some of the donors who have given so generously already. #bigbuild #cancer #greatormondstreet #ambassador

Magical afternoon at Buckingham Palace with Mrs P to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the @kingstrust . Great to see so many wonderful volunteers and mentors there as well as the incredible young people who have been helped by the trust. It’s a real honour to be an ambassador for them. The weather held fair until the very end despite dramatically stormy skies. The energy was high fuelled by afternoon tea and the brilliant military bands that played in the gardens. In 1959, on the eve of his historic journey on the Aurora 7 spacecraft, NASA astronaut Malcolm Scott Carpenter received a letter from his father, about the power of Mother Nature.

A fantastic day at Windsor Castle with @scouts from all over the UK. I was there with our Chief Scout @dwaynefields & @kirstymackster to celebrate recipients of the King’s Scout award with their families and the brilliant teams of volunteers who support them along their journey. 26 years of enjoying time outdoors together all began with a first anniversary spent hiking and camping in Washington State on leave with the @usarmy . We didn’t have a honeymoon as I had to be back at work in Texas 5 days after our wedding in St. Andrews and we always joked that our tiny two person tent wasn’t cutting it as a honeymoon location! But we loved exploring the incredible wild spaces that America had to offer and weren’t quite ready to give it up for a ‘proper’ honeymoon just yet. #anniversary #wildspaces #scotland #exploreamerica

For the final flight of #Spitfire90, we were joined by @astro_timpeake who flew on board the Dakota from Exeter to Southampton. Tim has been involved in Spitfire90, having judged the competition run by the @telegraph where one lucky winner was able to win a flight in ‘K5054’ as she returns back to @goodwood later today! #Spitfire #Dakota #Astro

Much more will be said about this mission from technical and scientific perspectives but fundamentally, in these confusing, challenging times it is the human story that speaks loudest. It is a story of team work, camaraderie, respect, determination, international collaboration and years of hard graft by thousands of talented, passionate people working together to make something positive happen. It has been a source of huge pride to see the joy on that incredible crew’s faces and to hear their powerful words during the mission and at the press conference afterwards. Congratulations and thank you to @astro_reid @astrovicglover @astro_christina and @astrojeremy , to your families who have supported you unwaveringly and to everyone involved at every level, in making Artemis ll such a success.
