May at Goodwood.
Bask in the glorious May sunshine, where spring gently yields to early summer and the Estate comes into full bloom. Every corner is brimming with energy, from the thunder of hooves across the Racecourse, the low purr of engines at Breakfast Club and the excited panting of dogs leaping around the estate as Goodwoof returns to us once more.
At The Kennels, the season unfolds through a thoughtful programme of talks, masterclasses and behind-the-scenes experiences, alongside seasonal dining that celebrates the freshest flavours, sourced from the Estate’s own Home Farm.
We are excited to welcome Nabihah Iqbal to the Goodwood Art Foundation for an immersive musical experience, surrounded by world-class contemporary art. On Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 May, Nabihah will share two intimate performances blending classical and electronic sounds that offer a rare opportunity to experience new music within the natural landscape that inspired its creation.
On 3rd May, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of Breakfast Club at Goodwood Motor Circuit. Twenty years of remarkable cars, shared mornings and community spirit.
His Grace, The Duke of Richmond and Gordon, marked the occasion with the ceremonial cutting of a cake, a fitting gesture for the occasion and a reminder that no celebration is complete without a slice of cake.
Thank you to all who joined us for the morning and supported our partner charity, the Aldingbourne Trust.
The Kennels stands as one of the finest buildings on the Goodwood Estate, a striking Grade I listed building designed by James Wyatt in 1787 to house the third Duke of Richmond’s hounds. In 2006, the current Duke of Richmond led the restoration of this beautiful building, guided by his vision to transform the space into a clubhouse for all of Goodwood’s sporting members.
The original kennels comprised a central four-square house for the Huntsman, flanked by long, low wings where the hounds were lodged. The building quickly became renowned for its heating system, which channelled warmth through large iron plates fed by large fires, a luxury that hadn’t been installed in the estate’s residences, including Goodwood House, at this time. By 1790, when the Duke of Richmond’s Hounds returned to Goodwood, they were considered the best quartered in the country.
Today, The Kennels stands as the beating heart of the Estate, welcoming all Goodwood’s members through its doors. It is a place where members can enjoy a drink on the terrace, take in the sweeping views over the Duchess Paddock and towards Goodwood House, savour seasonal menus crafted directly from The Kennels kitchen, or retreat to the comfort of the drawing room, basking in quiet moments or sharing a moment with family or friends. And dogs, of course, remain prized guests. Welcomed throughout the year at The Kennels, they can find comfy beds placed throughout the building, tuck into dog biscuits and personalised water bowls and, most spectacularly of all, take part in the biggest dog celebration, Goodwoof, on the lawn in front of The Kennels, providing scenes that would have surely entertained the 3rd Duke.
