Shout out to Ron for being a real one. I found Ron when he was homeless trawling the streets of Puerto Escondido. Taught him his AiDA 3. Now he’s homeless with me in the streets of Dominica. Carving out a living crushing depth in the Caribbean Sea. Clean. Mean and on the dream team.

My brother @harrymccahill has asked me to share why I love freediving.
I love the peace, the inward focus and to challenge myself and my limits safely.
Being in the water brings me a close connection to being safe and protected like in the womb. To the connectedness of the planet and all life on it.
Freediving is also full of legends, with whom I’ve had the privilege of meeting. There aren’t many sports where a novice athlete can rub shoulders and learn from the sports greats.
As freediving transitions I hope that better safety protocols will be put in place, that those diving recklessly will not be used as coaches and inspiration.
Let’s keep our sport strong with those that embrace it for its pureness and continue to condone those who look to send it into disrepute.

The seconds just before surfacing… the last part of the dive is the most high risk.
Judge on the surface keenly watching. Safeties, my friends and fellow British freedivers @harrymccahill and @arrywalks full focus on me, primed to take action, if needed.

You can see my hand on my nose - about to take my nose clip off.
The last training period I introduced a lot of new things, one was an ascent alarm at 5m and the removal of the noseclip underwater.
I had also started packing (before now I wasn’t packing) so releasing the air before surfacing is more comfortable.
It’s also a bit of a wake-up and preparation for surface protocol which I found really helpful.
It’s always been a lot for me to go from really deep focus inside on the dive and then boom surface and I have to join the world again and have a lot of stuff to do - breathe, look at the judges, stay above the water / noseclip / sign / I’m ok - if AIDA / ok sign only if CMAS, and all this within a set time.
Then, if it’s a national record attempt there is the emotion of that, and that really needs to be put to one side until the white card is shown and the dive ratified. Only then can the dive be celebrated and all the emotions released. You can not imagine how much I’m looking forward to when that next happens for me ☺️
