I can finally share a little teaser of episode 2 of my short documentary series ‘Tales of the Ocean’, in which I portray people that have a special connection to the ocean. This episode is about a very important person in my life, Emily Padjen. Or as most people know her: Padjen. We spoke about doing this for a long time and I’m super happy we decided to go for it. Padjen has an inspiring story and a beautiful way of choosing her words. I know she was nervous to share her story, so thank you for trusting me Padj ♥️ It took quite some time to produce this one, since it’s a passion project which means not a priority in my agenda. Also, Padjen and I only spend a few months a year in the same place and those days on island are usually busy for both of us. Plus, it’s easy to underestimate the time and effort it costs to create a documentary as a one-man-production-crew. Even if it’s only a few minutes long. Jade and the Ocean 🪸🎬✨ I asked Jade what the ocean makes her feel. Most people answer that question with something like ‘calmness’ or ‘peace, but Jade said it makes her want to move, explore and dance. It might make her mind calm, but her body wants to move. For some of us the ocean can feel comforting, if not healing. This is the case for Chris. On the days where she struggles with her health, the ocean is her rescue. Some days she feels vulnerable and weak going in, but powerful and strong coming out. The vastness of the ocean makes her feel secure. She can let go. Freediving is transformative for Chris, so we decided to capture those feelings in a series of photos. I chose to share 2 photos of this shoot that make you feel that shift, especially next to each other. One displays her vulnerability, the other displays the power the water has given her. I’ve been lucky with many turtle encounters lately. This youngster showed up right next to me and was surprisingly calm for its size. Most sea turtles this small have recently returned to the reef from theirs open ocean “lost years” and haven’t encountered many humans yet. This baby was about the size of a big dinner plate.
