Lighting shapes how a workplace feels, functions and flows. For @armarchitecture new studio at Level 27, 303 Collins Street, different lighting moods were used to define the experience of each space - from deep blue focus zones designed for concentrated work, to warmer hospitality-inspired settings that bring energy and character into shared areas. Integrated lighting and ceiling elements help guide movement throughout the studio while creating clear shifts between collaboration, presentation and quieter moments of work. 📸 @sharyncairns #familybuilt

Something's not adding up in the housing equation. The homes most needed are the hardest to build – not because of planning delays or labour shortages alone, but because they don't stack up commercially. It's a genuinely hard problem but surely not unsolvable. What will it take to fix it? For Melbourne Design Week, we're bringing together the people managing housing pressure with those designing the response. It's a public panel discussion to tease out real tensions. Our panellists are senior voices from government, research, community housing, and design – people with skill sets and diverse experience in managing, and living with the tensions, challenges and opportunities in addressing housing system stress. Event date and time: Wednesday 20 May, 5pm (for 5.30 start) – 7pm (ticketed, refreshment on arrival) Panellists: Marjorie Kennedy, Head of Homelessness & Housing Pathways, Homes Melbourne Michele Morrison, Chief Development Officer, Homes Victoria Rebecca Bentley, Director, NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Healthy Housing, University of Melbourne Contessa Von Barron, Senior Manager Affordable Homes & Retirement Living, VMCH Jesse Judd, Director, ARM Architecture Jack Panton, Managing Director, Affordable Housing Solutions (moderator) Get your ticket via the link in bio. ARCHITECTS Today we congratulate our newest architects Jawad Rezaee and Cecilia Yao. For achieving registration, and their contribution to ARM’s practice in all sorts of ways, we take this moment to recognise their grit and growth. Architect registration takes hard work and commitment. You’re not an architect without it. It signals to clients and builders that our teams have what it takes in skills, knowledge and experience. A passionate colleague in our Sydney studio, Jawad’s digital skills, leadership and workflow strategy are a powerful combination. In Melbourne, Cecelia’s confidence in design presentations, reviews and technical problem solving is born out of an exceptionally thorough approach to everything. ARM stands for inclusive and relevant design. Cecilia’s and Jawad’s mindsets, skillsets and culturally diverse perspectives are essential to our unique style and standards. We’re glad they’re with us.

We’ve triumphed in the design competition for the new Museum of Islamic Art Australia. Described it as “a big audacious project” by Islamic Science and Research Academy director Professor Mehmet Ozalp, the first arts museum of its kind in Sydney will be a place for Australians to deepen our understanding of Islam through educational and artistic programs, tours and excursions. @isra.org.au @museumofislamicartaustralia @rpinfrastructure

Meetings with remarkable plantings November 18th, 2002 Olive Tree transplant Shrine of Remembrance, Melbourne After a 12-month process of preparation, the ‘Legacy’ Olive tree was moved about 50 metres from its original home within the Shrine Reserve into the north-west garden courtyard, then nearing completion. Water-jet cutting had established a 5 x 6m root mass, and a steel frame was used to lift the trunks as one, bolted through the stems. Ably led by Established Tree Transplanters’ Joe di Ciero, the tree was lifted with a 300-tonne hydraulic crane in a series of gentle lifts, walking it up the slope, then up and over the walls. Planted into a deep pit of sand, and decked above, the tree has formed the centrepiece of the garden ever since. After 27 years atop a city car park, national architecture, interiors and urban design firm ARM has moved its Melbourne cool to a swish and contemporary studio in a central city tower.   Amid the disco-infused joy of The Huxleys, the studio was launched last week by Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Margaret Gardner AC, Governor of Victoria @vicgovernor , with a speech that would make us blush if we were bashful.   Launching the new studio is to celebrate four decades of contribution to Australia’s architectural, civic and cultural life. A creative, research-led approach has been foundational to ARM’s practice whose questioning spirit has produced a national body of work that is unmistakable, influential, and widely recognised. Who’s got the most winning ideas at RMIT architecture? ARM’s prize is awarded annually for design projects that are intellectually ambitious, iconoclastic, and reflect contemporary practice.   This year’s judges were Ian McDougall, Neil Masterton and Lucy Carruthers. Big thanks to the RMIT staff who brought the projects forward and engaged with us during the judging, and congratulations to the minds behind the projects.   This year the award is split between 2 projects:   Salt, Saliva, Sperm & Sweat – studio led by Michael Spooner (image 1) Ephemeral Geologies – studio led by Alan Kim (image 2)   Our very own Nadia Poppen was honoured with an RMIT Masters Award for Design Excellence (image 3)   image 1 (L-R) Luke Infantino @luke_infantino with ARM’s Lucy Carruthers @lscarruthers and Neil Masterton image 2 (L-R) Lucy Carruthers, Justin Mellor @juzzyjmellor , Balazs Szucs @balazs.arch , Derek Ji  and  Neil Masterton image 3 (L-R) Dr John Doyle @dr_john_doyle , Nadia Poppen @nadiaspoppen and Dr Patrick Macasaet @superscale   @rmitarchitecture photos @tope_adesina

ARM Director Mark Raggatt is an excellent architect, editor, teacher, curator and critic whose work has earnt him a broad and erudite knowledge in the disciplines of architecture and urban design. He works best where trust paves opportunity for conversation in fun and rewarding ways. And now, he’s a Fellow of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, in honour of outstanding contributions to the profession beyond architectural practice. We couldn’t be gladder for him. Mark’s contribution to cultural discussion and advancing architectural practice is provocative, generous, and essential. Essential, yes - especially to all of us at ARM, and all the beneficiaries of his professional engagement: the RMIT Architecture Industry Advisory Committee, NSWGA Design Excellence juries, volunteering on the Sydney Diocese Anglican Design Panel, AIA juries and the NSW Editorial Committee, design research and teaching at RMIT University and the University of Technology Sydney, and regular contributions to journals and forums in Australia and abroad. @institute_architects_aus @architecturensw
