GAMING FUTURES: CIVIC WORLDS FOR CITY NORTH Launches Monday 18 May at gamingfutures.world A civic world you can enter. We are excited to launch 'Gaming Futures: Civic Worlds for City North' as part of Melbourne Design Week 2026 — Australia’s largest annual international design event. Presented by RMIT AUD Immersive Futures Lab @immersivefutures , the project is a downloadable architectural game world inviting audiences to explore speculative futures for RMIT’s City North precinct through gameplay, architecture and civic storytelling. Rather than simply looking at drawings, renders or static images, audiences can enter an explorable world shaped by architecture, ecology, data, climate futures, cultural narratives, Indigenous knowledges and community stories. Developed through the RMIT Master of Architecture design studio Continuums, Data, Being 2: RMIT City North in Semester 2, 2025, led by Vei Tan and Dr Patrick Macasaet with Cienan Muir (Yorta Yorta/Ngarrindjeri) of @Indiginerd . Developed with RMIT Master of Architecture students Hussain Asghar, Vanessa Batras, Callan Beaton, Ashlin Cam @ashlincam , Patrick Downs, Ruoxuan Jiang, Whitney Lay, Wen Kang Evan Leow, On Tung Leung, Andy Luu, Tevin McSweeney, Mandisa Sarker, Natthanan Surachartkumthornkul, Ryan Tan and Leonardo Teller. Produced in partnership with and supported by the RMIT City North Social Innovation Precinct. Melbourne Design Week takes place 14–24 May 2026 and is an initiative of the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria, curated and delivered by NGV. @NGVMelbourne @Creative_Vic @rmitarchitecture @rmituniversity #MelbourneDesignWeek #MDW2026 #NGV #CreativeVic #architecture

The World Before: Part III Publics. Play. Engagement. 2014–2018. Early worldmaking experiments, before the language arrived. These worlds were never meant to stay on screens. They spilled outward as fantastical supermarkets, vending machines, claw machines, arcades. Into installations that invited touching, playing, wandering. They weren’t exclusive or rarefied. They were curious. Accessible. Joyful. Built for many publics; big and small, young and old, to step inside. Looking back, we can see it clearly now: immersive thinking before we called it immersive experience. #ImmersiveExperience #PublicInstallation #PlayfulArchitecture #ManyPublics #Worldmaking @immersivefutures @rmitarchitecture @mimaworkshop @superscale @mimawisms

The World Before: Part II Stories. Figures. Impossible Inhabitants. 2014–2021. Early worldmaking experiments, before the language arrived. If the atmospheres were portals, the characters were their pulse. Vei summoned beings who felt suspended between pop culture, architecture and speculative fiction. They didn’t just occupy space, they asked where they belonged. Virtual. Physical. Nowhere. Everywhere. These figures carried emotions architecture rarely admits. Playfulness, absurdity, tenderness, estrangement. They stretched the discipline toward narrative and imagination. What we now call “worldmaking” for us, was once a collection of sketches, avatars, characters, scenes, simulations and strange protagonists trying to find a home. #NarrativeArchitecture #SpeculativeFutures #CharacterDesign #PopCultureMeetsArchitecture #ImaginativeWorlds @immersivefutures @rmitarchitecture @mimaworkshop @superscale @mimawisms

The World Before: Part I Atmospheres. Compositions. Other Realities. 2014–2021. Early worldmaking experiments, before the language arrived. Before “worldmaking polemics,” there were MIMAWISMS. Conceived by Vei Tan (@mimaworkshop ), MIMAWISMS weren’t projects, they were sensibilities. A way of seeing sideways. A method of slipping between the generic everyday and the surreal. Through mixed media, animation, speculative imagery and oblique storytelling, Vei constructed atmospheric fragments that were strange yet familiar. Worlds charged with emotion and composition. They questioned the ordinary not through critique, but through mood, texture and narrative drift. These early experiments seeded what followed - Arcade, Supermarket, Wander Wonder, Future Naarm: First Light. #Worldmaking #MIMAWISMS #VeiTan #Atmospherics #SpeculativeDesign MixedMediaArt ArchitecturalImagination Worldbuilding CreativePractice BeforeTheTheory

BEHIND THE SCENES: 2025 RESEARCH ELECTIVES MASSIVE thank you to all students & alumni who joined us on these research adventures in 2025! We made new characters, atmospheres, worlds, tools, stories, models and so much wondrous mess. We’ll be sharing more outcomes (there's too many fun things to share) and exciting news from these research projects in 2026. Are you watching closely? GAMR UNIT 4: MAROU EDITION (S1 2025) This year marked the final chapter of GAMR Unit Series, 4 years since its first launch in 2022. We used the 2025 LAGI competition to simulate a gaming architectural practice, producing a collective competition entry for a regenerative work of landscape art. The project proposed resilient clean energy and water infrastructure for the village of Marou, Fiji. The elective focused on immersive modelling, real-time data, energy, and visualisation. Students explored a range of modelling and real-time tools in Unreal Engine, simulating feedback loops between architecture and the environment through immersive, real-time impacts and effects. IMMERSIVE FUTURES LAB: ELECTIVE STUDENT RESEARCHERS (S1 & S2 2025) Throughout the year, we invited select students to nurture and collaborate with in the RMIT AUD Immersive Futures Lab (IFL @immersivefutures ) on a series of industry-partnered projects. This included research and development with the Melbourne Recital Centre, the RMIT City North Social Innovation Precinct, and speculative investigations with the State Library of Victoria. GAMING FUTURES: Architectural Worlds for City North Big love to everyone who attended, engaged, played and shared their thoughts for the future of RMIT City North as part of our exploratory 'studio-to-street' pedagogical and engagement model. Everyone was invited to step into the future through student-designed architectural worlds from the RMIT Master of Architecture design studio ‘Continuums, Data, Being 2: RMIT City North’. Students presented speculative design proposals through immersive gaming environments and projections, inviting the public to explore and contribute to the future of City North. Gaming Futures is an evolving exchange between students, the public, industry, and the city itself. By blending architecture, gaming, projections, and conversation, the event opened the design studio to community participation, positioning City North as both a live testing ground for speculative futures and a shared space of civic imagination. Presented by RMIT University with the City of Melbourne @cityofmelbourne and many partners. RMIT Architecture Students: Hussain Asghar, Vanessa Batras, Callan Beaton, Ashlin Cam, Patrick Downs, Ruoxuan Jiang, Whitney Lay, Wen Kang Evan Leow, On Tung Leung, Andy Luu, Tevin McSweeney, Mandisa Sarker, Natthanan Surachartkumthornkul, Ryan Tan, Leonardo Teller. RMIT AUD Immersive Futures Lab: Ashlin Cam @_ashhcam , Dan Jerinel Bay @orijerinel , Kaitlyn Matthews @kait__mat , Ishika Thakur @ishik.arch .
