Tsuruoka House by Kiyoaki Takeda Architects, 2021. @kiyoakitakeda Vaulted concrete slabs hold deep soil troughs capable of growing shrubs and small trees across every level. Over time, birds will seed unplanned species. Eventually, the building disappears beneath a small urban forest. @maynardarchitect @kevinhui_archimarathon #archimarathon #tokyoarchitecture #biophilic #sustainabledesign #tokyo

While on the road in British Columbia, Canada, we dropped by the Capilano University Fulmer Family Centre for Childhood Studies by @publicdesignvancouver - a shared space for childcare and students enrolled in early childhood care and education studies. Amazing use of glulam timber to bring warmth to the space and connect it to the forest outside.    Structural Engineer: @whmengineers Owner: @capilanou Construction: Smith Bros. & Wilson Mass timber supplier: @kalesnikoff_ Mechanical Engineer: @ame_group Electrical Engineer: @aes_engr Envelope Engineer: @rdhbuildingscience Energy Modelling: @rdhbuildingscience LEED Consultant: Village Consulting Landscape Architect: @PFSStudio Signage: @lostandfoundsocial Civil Engineer: @wspcanada This is part of our series on mass timber in British Columbia, in collaboration with @naturallywood_bc . Ten days across British Columbia. Forests, seed centres, factories, construction sites, finished buildings. And then this: Woodrise 2025, the global mass timber conference in Vancouver. Part 5 of our Exploring Mass Timber series with @naturallywood_bc is our final dispatch from BC, sitting in on talks from architects and engineers from Vancouver, Amsterdam and China, debating housing, carbon, biophilic design and the future of mass timber. A fitting way to end the journey. Link in bio. Made in partnership with naturally:wood (@naturallywood_bc ). @maynardarchitect @kevinhui_archimarathon #masstimber #sustainablearchitecture #woodarchitecture #architecture #archimarathon

Link in bio. Made in partnership with naturally:wood (@naturallywood_bc ), with thanks to StructureCraft, Richmond Oval, Capilano University, The Hive, 837 Beatty Street and 981 Davie Street. @maynardarchitect @kevinhui_archimarathon #masstimber #architecture #britishcolumbia #wood #archimarathon

Sayama Lakeside Cemetery Community Hall by Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP, 2013. A building designed around grief. The eave sits at exactly the height of a person looking down. When you sit, the Sayama hills appear beyond the reflecting pool. @hiroshi_nakamura_naparchitects @maynardarchitect @kevinhui_archimarathon #archimarathon #japan #japanarchitecture #sacredspace #hiroshinakamura

Depot Boijmans van Beuningen by MVRDV, 2021. Most art depots are just big boxes hidden from the public. This one sits in Museumpark, clad entirely in mirrored glass that reflects Rotterdam’s skyline back at street level. Its footprint is actually smaller than the rooftop garden sitting above it. @maynardarchitect @kevinhui_archimarathon @mvrdv #archimarathon #rotterdam #mvrdv #museum #dutcharchitecture

Where Art Is Work and Work Is Community. Dafen Oil Painting Village, Shenzhen A Hong Kong art dealer arrived in 1989. Migrant painters followed. What grew is one of the most human urban environments in China. Narrow alleys, open workshops, neighbours who are also colleagues, also competitors. @maynardarchitect @kevinhui_archimarathon #archimarathon #shenzhen #urbanism #urbanvillage #community
