There are so many things to consider when you’re thinking about extending or renovating your home. The word ‘sustainability’ can add a whole other layer of overwhelm, but actually it underpins everything, even the layout of your home. This is where we start. SPACE: thorough, careful briefing will help you work out what you need to build and what you don’t. Sometimes the project you thought you needed isn’t it. Creating the right layout and flow of space, with zoning crafted for activities, will keep you in your home for longer because it reflects essential and aspirational living patterns. MATERIALS: it’s vital to be resourceful and meaningful with what you use, and in the right amounts. Some materials have a higher environmental impact than others, so it’s all about considered balance across the project. ENERGY: new spaces have to be illuminated, heated and ventilated…designing these spaces considerately means less energy used in operation. And designing with a ‘fabric first’ approach ensures that spaces don’t overheat or lose too much heat in the first place. In our briefing process, we help clients make sense of these starting points as the baseline for everything that comes afterwards. In this way, sustainability is baked in to our work and through research and testing, we can make this even more meaningful. Another completed project! It’s the perfect time of year to get out with the camera and see what’s been going on on site. I’ve been so looking forward to seeing the beautiful garden captured here for real through the feature up and over rooflight, and just being! There’s something so serene about this place and the client told me they love to sit and look up at the garden from the dining table. 🌳🌾 The glazing brings much needed light into the extension and the existing deep plan of the house, without taking on too much heat. The big sliding doors allow the terrace to become part of the kitchen and vice versa for instant access to the garden. The extension itself creates a more free-flowing space for the family to spend time together but not in each other’s pockets, and a little more generosity when entertaining or just wafting around the kitchen enjoying the houseplants! 🪴 The brief was brought to life by a super creative client and an excellent team ✨ #anotherarchitecture #love #renovation #refurbishment #architecture #design #houseextension #extension #home #newhome #homesweethome #architect #türkiye ameside #homeinspo #homeinspiration #smallproject #domesticproject

PRACTICE PROFILE : @another_a_i another architecture + interiors is a design-led architecture studio in Stockport, Cheshire. Our passion is getting to the heart of our projects to find the unique design response in each one. We believe that good design enhances life and living, through careful consideration of materiality, light, proportion and sustainability in every sense. Simple, efficient, but imaginative design should always be the first principle that everything else is built upon, but it should be practical enough to be used every day, enhancing the activities that are connected with it. We believe that this principle can be applied across every project. The practice director, Sarah Green, is an architect with over 15 years design experience built from residential and commercial architecture and interior design projects around the North West. She is also a part-time tutor at the University of Liverpool School of Architecture.

Adventures outside of Stockport alert! I was asked to talk about running my practice for the RIBA Part 3 Summer Seminars in London recently, and it was such an honour to be involved. The attendees were on the third of four days of intense lectures as they approached their final exams and submissions towards fully qualifying to use the title ‘Architect’. I remember how it felt to be in those lecture theatres so well, with a completely saturated brain…and so having their attention (and lots of excellent questions afterwards) was a privilege. It’s also so important to me to share the realities of running a small practice in the context of education, so having this opportunity was awesome. Lots of great schemes and interesting programmes were presented last week as part of @archiam_centre -led BA3 RE-heritage Studio’s final review. From ancient wines and recipes to traditional olive oil making, from stone carving to literary heritage, from historic walking trails to local vernacular architecture and construction, the rich heritage of Mulazzo and Lunigiana is celebrated. A topographically challenging and disconnected site is creatively linked up with a view to reactivating this shrinking historic town and improving access for all.
