Anders Bergstrom’s witty and profound works challenge the viewer to reexamine their connection to the detritus of everyday life, and the notion of the “readymade” in contemporary art. Mining the trompe l’oeil tradition of artisanal exactitude, Bergstrom’s highly skilled process meticulously handcrafts the look and feel of brown paper bags, whether new, stained, ripped, or destined for garbage. His work pays homage to the flat-bottomed, folded brown paper bag, whose late 19th century invention is patented by both Charles Stilwell of Union Paper Bag Machine Co. and Margaret E. Knight of the Columbia Paper Bag Company. Using archival paper, which the Bergstrom cuts, folds, assembles, and disassembles – and an array of inks to convey brown tones, abstract stains, and even the manufacturer’s stamp – the work harks to precedents in Claes Oldenburg’s The Street and The Store and Robert Gober’s “readymade” receipts and newspaper advertisements. Bergstrom’s masterful approach dissolves all distinctions between everyday items, art treasures, collecting, and discarding.

Great morning at The Metropolitan museum of art print room with Luca Frepoli and Nadine, talking about brown bags, hidden labor, and counter proofs! I had not seen this piece since it was on view in the Johnson gallery in 2016.
Thank you @metdrawingsandprints
