I met Mario on my first trip to Cuba in 2015 when you still had to sneak in through Mexico. He was the most dapper man in El Centro - fedora cocked just right, buttoned up, shoes shined, a stark contrast of personal care against a world crumbling around him. I returned to Cuba often over the following years and ran into Mario on every trip, the way the universe seems to orchestrate when you travel. On my final trip, I happened to stay in a room next door to Mario’s final home, a janitor’s closet at the end of the hall. I don’t know if he recognized me. He seemed much older, this man whose grace and style once lit the streets of Habana now sitting in a dark room, asking me for the literal shirt off my back, the only available light pouring in through a small hole at the top of the wall, a contrast of light and dark, a contrast of realities. Maybe that’s the miracle of light, though, the way it finds its way through the cracks, the way it pierces the dark. A single lumen adds shape and reveals the truth of a space. In dark places, in dark times, the smallest amount of light, the smallest acts of kindness shine infinitely bright; A simple smile, an encouraging word, a patient disposition, can alter reality. In Mario’s room, a small hole in the wall revealed a lifetime of story, the depth of his 102 year old frame nearing the finish line, eyes gazing toward the light. When the world feels dark, Mario’s life, this room, encourages me to be that small, seemingly insignificant light.
