There’s a new sheriff in town and he’s got a fully loaded 6-shooter (Sony FX6 with high capacity SD cards)… Feeling incredibly inspired after an amazing week at @jacksonwildorg with @wrong.whale and our short film @tippingpointdoc . Being a part of this community feels like finding an unbleached coral on an increasingly barren reef. Huge thank you to Shayle for trusting me with your story and for the work you do every day. It was such a joy getting to share this week with you. And as always, thank you to the dream team behind this project! Wouldn’t be here without ya! Till the next rodeo 🤠🪸

Shlepping a set of anamorphic prime lenses up one of the tallest mountains in the lower 48 felt a little ridiculous at 13,000 ft, but back at sea level, I’m glad we did! These stills are from my latest project, ā€œIslands in the Sky,ā€ following Dr. Zachary MacDonald and Kentaro Matsunaga to the peak of Mt. Langley in search of the elusive Ivallda Arctic butterfly. This remarkable insect is one of three butterflies endemic to the Sierra Nevada and is being pushed to the very highest peaks in search of suitable habitat as the climate warms. Huge thanks to @drzacmacdonald and @ken.taro3 for bringing me into their world and to @sonycine @sonyprofilmmaking for supporting this project!! No spoilers yet - you’ll have to stay tuned to see if we actually found the Ivallda Arctic at the summit. For now, enjoy these stills of our adventure and a few of the rare and stunning butterflies we encountered along the way.

Big news! My latest documentary TIPPING POINT is a finalist at the @jacksonwildorg awards — aka ā€œNature’s Oscars.ā€ This film tells the story of marine biologist Shayle Matsuda, as he draws on the resilience he has cultivated in his personal life to inform his research on increasing thermal tolerance in corals. It’s a very timely story and we are extremely honored to have it be a part of the media awards this year. Huge thanks to @jacksonwildorg for recognizing this film and to Dr. Shayle Matsuda (@wrong.whale ) for allowing us to tell his story! And huge love and gratitude to the incredible team who made this happen: šŸŽž Editor: @maxleemueller šŸ“· DP: @ingrid_sanchez_dp ā€ØšŸŽ„ Producer: @focalstories ā€ØšŸŽ¼ Composer: @alexander_zhu_composer ā€ØšŸ”Š Sound Design: @marcellodubazsoundz ā€ØšŸŽØ Color: @fuzzypictures.tv ā€ØšŸ–‹ Titles: @emmaberliner šŸ–¼ļø Poster: @ryvecreative Special thanks to @shedd_aquarium and our amazing friends at @idaorg for fiscally sponsoring the film. Let’s go!! 🐠🪸 #JacksonWild #TippingPointFilm #Documentary #MarineBiology #CoralReef #LGBTQinSTEM #ClimateChange #WildlifeFilm #ScienceStorytelling #NatureOscars

In film school, I made this strange little meditative short about how technology disconnects us from nature. I shot it in one afternoon on a beach in Malibu with a 16mm hand-cranked camera - a frustrating and hyper-intentional process that sharply contrasts shooting digital. Then @DanielWalterMusic composed this wonderful and haunting electronic rearrangement of Debussy’s ā€œReflets dans l’eauā€. This film explores contradictions:
Can technology drive social change while also accelerating environmental harm?
Are we celebrating nature—or just commodifying it?
Is going into nature to find content better than doing nothing at all?
And what does it mean to share a film like this on a platform that profits from addictive scrolling and ad sales? Maybe the real question is: how do we create impact that goes beyond just posting? Happy Earth Day—today and every day.
Hope you enjoy our little film.

It’s been a joy bringing BAT BOY across the country the last few months. Thanks to @sedonafilmfestival @nyicff @conservationfilmfest and @joshuatreenps for hosting us. And thanks to the amazing audiences who have come out and nominated us for multiple audience awards! It’s been especially inspiring to see diverse audiences connect to the themes of hope, resilience, personal agency and empathy right now. And care about this strange and amazing creature we share our planet with! šŸ¦‡šŸ¦‡ā¤ļø
