A la découverte de @amiryoussef____ Amir Youssef est né en 1992. Il travaille entre Paris et Alexandrie (Égypte). Il est diplômé de la faculté des beaux-arts d’Alexandrie, où il a également enseigné, de l’École supérieure d’art d’Aix-en-Provence et du Fresnoy – studio national des arts contemporains de Tourcoing. Dans Apoléon (2024), un film de 15 minutes réalisé au Fresnoy – studio national des arts contemporains, Amir Youssef Yacob revisite avec humour et acuité l’expédition de Napoléon en Égypte à la fin du XVIIIe siècle. En détournant les dioramas et figurines exposés au musée de l’Armée à Paris, l’artiste explore la manière dont l’histoire coloniale s’incarne dans les institutions muséales et les imaginaires collectifs européens. Le film mêle documentaire et fiction pour donner voix à une lecture égyptienne de la campagne napoléonienne. En revisitant le mythe de la rencontre entre Napoléon et le Sphinx, Amir Youssef Yacob s’empare d’un épisode fondateur de la mémoire coloniale égyptienne. Il interroge la persistance des récits européens sur le monde arabe et les manières de les relire depuis un autre point de vue. Thank you to everyone who joined us last night for the opening of EMAN by Amir Youssef, an intimate reflection on memory, absence, and the traces we carry. The video installation is on view until 29 July, Tuesday to Saturday, from 10AM to 6PM, in the gallery’s basement.

🎥 SCREENING | AMIR YOUSSEF – EMAN Join us in our basement space on 15th July starting at 6PM for showing EMAN, a video installation by Egyptian artist Amir Youssef, playing in loop until 8PM Born 1992, Alexandria, Egypt Lives and works between Paris and Alexandria EMAN reimagines how memory endures when traditional archives fail, questioning technology's role as a vessel for grief and how spiritual longing finds expression through personal memories. In this encounter between faith and machine, the sacred is translated, reframed, and re-envisioned. Amir's work unfolds along two main paths: one examines the absurdity of war and the historical narratives shaped by post-colonialism, the other engages with religious themes reimagining sacred texts as poetic and transcendent experiences. His research is rooted in the study of early visual culture and media archeology focusing on how movement and narrative evolve across different formats such as sculpture installation film and video. A long-standing interest in transforming the function and significance of objects continues to guide his creative process.
