On the blog: "Devanagari Typography 101: A guide for typesetting with Latin" by @aasawari_kulkarni , a deep dive into some best practices for setting Devanagari alongside Latin type. Also, check out the blog header in Wefts, a new typeface also by Aasawari! Images: 1. Vertical Devanagari Type set without the Shirorekha (Kolhapur, India) 2. A is for Alphabettes—but also for Amy 💚 The first bound copy of Alphabettes Soup goes to its editor, Amy Papaelias, community builder extraordinaire. Come say hi to her tomorrow at our soft launch, starting at 6pm at Bikini (Rua António José da Silva, 63, Porto)! A little over two years ago, when Bikini was still a fabulation, we received a charming email from Ms. Papaelias: “Are you accepting book proposals?” A design educator from New Paltz, Amy wanted to make a book celebrating Alphabettes—the decentralized community she helped grow—and was looking for a publisher, but not an academic one. Little did she know she had come knocking on the door of a feminist type nerd, and one who knew the industry’s misogyny all too well. It sounded like a dream. What followed was an intense two-year collaboration. We plotted and executed a financing plan, revised and expanded the book’s content list, and came up with an ambitious brief: a feminist book on type cannot only tell stories—it should also be a type specimen. One that functions as a discovery guide for readers and type nerds alike. It was a journey full of jokes and puns, but also a sheer amount of stress, from missing texts to incomplete character sets, to tariffs, delays, fires, and cancelled flights. We handled everything with our secret ingredient: “hot feminist butter”—patience and listening, whipped with a lot of humour and improvisation. Big lesson: working together actually means working together. Instead of long email threads, there were calls and face-to-face time. We met up in New Paltz, Mainz, New York, Stockholm—and now Porto. Maiadouro (@graficamaiadouro ), our printer, is delivering the first batch of books this afternoon, so come around TOMORROW, Thursday April 2, to celebrate with us!! There will be cake, and yes—there will be music.
