In her new series of paintings, Better Together, Alina Bliumis draws on the medieval carnivalesque and its contemporary afterlives to explore the relationship between powerful institutions and grassroots resistance. Her compositions collapse symbols of corruption with scenes of tender mutual support. Surreal tableaux foreground the body as a site of vulnerability and dissent, with figures traversing uncertain terrain. References to the home and familial bonds proliferate, extending kinship beyond the nuclear family to include neighbors, friends, pets, and broader communities. For Bliumis’ protagonists, survival is a collective endeavor, sustained through intentionality, compassion, and mutual care.
