ART BRUSSELS 2026: XI’AN KIM Newchild presents a solo presentation of Xi’an Kim at Art Brussels, featuring eight new works by the artist. 24–27 April 2026 (booth 5E - 27) Xi’an Kim’s forthcoming solo ‘A Small Theater Inside the Home’ is a body of work where reality is not fixed, but contingent—formed through observation and attention. Drawing on objects from her life in South Korea, from inherited family items to flea market finds, Kim composes tightly staged tableaux that explore memory, presence, and the quiet relationships between things. These works unfold like intimate stage sets within the domestic interior. Objects carry emotional weight—often subtle, unresolved, or unspoken—reflecting formative relationships, particularly with her mother. Rather than offering narrative clarity, Kim allows atmosphere and spatial logic to guide interpretation. Her titles—structured simply as “Object + Number”—withhold meaning, resisting explanation and shifting responsibility to the viewer. Through proximity, texture, and alignment, each composition invites a slow, attentive reading. Technically precise, Kim’s surfaces combine sand, acrylic, and airbrush to create smooth yet materially dense skins. Her approach draws from the compositional logic of Joseon Dynasty Chaekgeori painting, reinterpreted through a contemporary, restrained visual language. In ‘A Small Theater Inside the Home’, meaning remains implicit—constructed through tension, intimacy, and sustained observation rather than narrative. - Xi’an Kim

#XianKim is included in 'What the Eye Brought Back' at P420. Kim Xian (@kims_obj ) (1992, Seoul, South Korea – lives and works in Seoul, South Korea) reimagines familiar creatures and objects by reconstructing them with textures similar to plastic. She approaches her work with the intent to focus solely on the essence, stripping away the additional elements that are often encountered in daily life. The objects and creatures reimagined as still life do not convey any particular temperature, yet they reveal forms that are objective, simple, and at times, candid. Everything in her paintings exists in an idealized state of nothingness, embodying the complexity of reality, or rather, the absence of conceptual ideas. Her works escape from reality and create a unique utopia of Kim Xian’s own. This space, which feels like a world of zero gravity, is free and peaceful, allowing one to forget all of the worries and troubles of the world. Artworks: 1.
