𝘋𝘌𝘛𝘙𝘖𝘐𝘛 〰️ Psyched to announce our first Reflections event in Detroit, immersed in the ambient jazz sounds of Will Miller — better known as @resavoir — and experimental guitarist Gregory Uhlmann (@gregoryuhlmann ). 𝗥𝗘𝗦𝗔𝗩𝗢𝗜𝗥 ~ a night of ambient jazz & electronics ~ ⎐ DETROIT Saturday, June 6  Cathedral Church of St. Paul ↳ with 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗚𝗢𝗥𝗬 𝗨𝗛𝗟𝗠𝗔𝗡𝗡  Miller’s first record as Resavoir, released by International Anthem (@intlanthem ) in 2019, became a favorite across scenes and subgenres, a richly textured, resplendent blend of ambient and soul-jazz. As a trusted session player for everyone from SZA to Whitney, Miller found a space all his own, collaging layer after layer of lush string arrangements, subtle electronics, and his own swirling, Hassell-esque melodies on trumpet guiding the way. In Detroit, Miller and friends reinterpret songs from his new album Themes For Dreams, with an opening set of dreamy guitar from Uhlmann and a light show projection-mapped to the walls of this history cathedral. On its surface, the album has a silky shimmer to it. Underneath, it’s searching, making sense of midlife, motivation, heartache, hope. The @hot.chip co-founder enlists collaborators who operate in a similar register (Nicolas Godin of 𝗔𝗜𝗥, 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗩𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗖𝗛𝗘𝗦, Green Gartside of 𝗦𝗖𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗧𝗜 𝗣𝗢𝗟𝗜𝗧𝗧𝗜) and channels an eclectic mix of spiritual forebears. Country ballads, soft-focus disco, Sly Stone’s Rhythm King rumination, David Lynch — there’s even a “Wild Horses” cover. In Taylor’s hands — and through his voice — it all flows into something tender and transcendent. This week, we host Alexis for two shows, in Chicago and San Francisco. CHICAGO 〰 This Saturday, May 2, guitarist Gregory Uhlmann (@gregoryuhlmann ) joins Reflections with Resavoir (@resavoir ) live at Wicker Park Lutheran Church. Two Chicago fixtures tracing their own strands of beautifully abstract, post-jazz experimentation into the outer reaches. Uhlmann’s résumé as a collaborator — live and in session — goes deep: an ongoing trio with Sam Wilkes and Josh Johnson, the trance-jazz quintet SML, Hand Habits, and a stint with Perfume Genius. His latest LP for @intlanthem , Extra Stars, teems with intricate patterns and warm, elastic textures. 𝚁𝙸𝚃𝚄𝙰𝙻 𝚂𝙿𝙴𝙲𝚃𝙰𝙲𝙻𝙴 ~ Alexis Taylor (@alexishotchip ), the producer, lead vocalist, and co-founder of beloved UK ensemble Hot Chip, joins Reflections on Wednesday, May 6 in Chicago, for an intimate solo show unlike any he’s tried to date. After two decades fronting Hot Chip and crafting his own solo material, Alexis keeps feeling his way into new territory. On the heels of his new album Paris in the Spring, we asked him to try something new. “What might an ambient Alexis Taylor set sound like?” we wondered out loud. Lucky us, Alexis decided to indulge that question for his Reflections debut. We’ve invited Alexis to let his tender, adventurous songcraft spiral out into space. 𝘊𝘏𝘐𝘊𝘈𝘎𝘖 ~ Experimental electronic trio Surgery Boys (w/ members of The Hood Internet and Black Moth Super Rainbow) joins Reflections on May 6. They’ll open for Hot Chip founder Alexis Taylor (@alexishotchip ) at Epiphany Center for the Arts. Convening around a shared love of hallucinatory sound, the Chicago ensemble of Steve Reidell, Joe Carsello, and Johnny Caluya combine group improv with MIDI-synced explorations. Across six releases on Volutus Records, the trio has carved out space to explore, from slow-blooming headtrips to jagged industrial noise. We’ll gather at Epiphany’s Main Hall, illuminated wall-to-wall with live-mapped visuals. Surgery Boys will set the scene, with a solo ambient set from Alexis to follow. Across a string of stellar records for @sacredbones and others, the Oakland-via-Ohio guitarist and songwriter has unfurled a world of spectral, shadowy beauty. Classically trained with an ear for experimentation, Maria taps a deep well of feeling on their latest LP, Marathon, setting delicate vocals against distorted guitar, prickly electronics, and industrial clatter. It’s music that doesn’t run from darkness — environmental ruin, loss — instead offering its own tender glow to commune around. In SF, Maria opens with guitar, voice, and electronics. Alexis follows with a very special, solo ambient set. All under a wash of projection-mapped light.
