Over the weekend, KARA joined the Electronic-waste Producer Responsibility Organization of Kenya (EPROK), E-waste Initiative Kenya (EWIK), and AfricaCollect Textiles for an E-waste & textile collection drive held in Baraka Estate, Nairobi. This initiative forms part of the partnership and MoU between KARA and EPROK, aimed at promoting sustainable post-consumer e-waste management across Kenyan neighborhoods. The drive provided residents with an opportunity to safely dispose of electronic waste and textiles, contributing to cleaner environments while supporting responsible recycling and circular economy practices. Through such collaborations, KARA continues to champion community-driven environmental sustainability, encouraging residents to play an active role in proper waste management and environmental protection. #Sustainability #EWasteManagement #CircularEconomy

We returned to Kenya this April 🇰🇪 After completing their training modules, the students entered the incubation phase — beginning the journey of developing their own sustainable fashion collections. The HUB is ready 🌟 This week focused on:  – defining target customers – exploring and analysing material sources – sharing initial ideas and inspiration individually and in small groups The week also included a visit from SEI Tallinn representatives and insightful discussions. Together, @eka_dima_lab and @kenyattauniversity , in collaboration with @africa.collect.textiles and SEI Tallinn, continue to support the next generation of circular designers 🌍 Supported by @estdevestonia – Estonian Centre for International Development, the initiative aims to map and repurpose textile production waste in Kenya while building long-term skills, opportunities, and circular design capacity locally. We’re looking forward to seeing the outcomes at the fashion show this November 👁👁 #CircularDesign #SustainableFashion #TextileWaste #DesignEducation #CircularEconomy

We are grateful to have presented these works at Lagos Fashion Week as part of the Woven Threads exhibition, curated by @sunnydolat for @lagosfashionweekofficial and @stylehousefiles The first piece pays tribute to Muthoni wa Kirima, a symbol of resilience and resistance against colonialism in Kenya. Through a fusion of woven textiles, quilting, and sculptural bark cloth, the work evokes a layered, defiant presence. Her extending dreadlocks and the Fawohodie motif speak to independence, resistance, and an unwavering commitment to liberation. Her story continues to resonate today, particularly in relation to ongoing struggles such as waste colonialism. Within Woven Threads—a platform grounded in circularity, sustainability, and responsible production—the piece reflects on how material, process, and history intersect across African fashion and textile ecosystems. The second work, Floor Cover Tapestry, spans approximately 3 x 4 meters and originates from a digital painting exploring deep blue tones layered with earthy interventions. Developed collaboratively, it begins with a base of large-scale denim skirts sourced as deadstock from Gikomba Market, overlaid with abstract textile forms that translate digital mark-making into a tactile composition. Stitching techniques—primarily herringbone along the edges and running stitch throughout—serve both structural and visual purposes, while emphasized warp threads add depth and texture. The work reflects collective labor, material reuse, and the translation of digital processes into handcrafted form. Special thanks to @eperu_magala for overseeing the development of these works in partnership with ACT. We’re proud to have contributed to this moment. #LagosFashionWeek #WovenThreads #AfricanFashion #TextileArt #SustainableFashion #CircularFashion #UpcycledTextiles #ContemporaryArt #WasteColonialism #KenyanArt #CollectiveMaking #GikombaMarket

Before textiles reach landfills, there is an opportunity to intervene and that’s where meaningful impact begins.♻️ During a recent visit with the Mennonite Central Committee, we spent time in Dandora exploring what happens at the end of a garment’s life—and why it doesn’t have to end there. By collecting textiles directly from the source, fewer clothes make their way into landfills, reducing waste and creating opportunities for reuse and transformation. We connected with The Jua Foundation, which supports children of waste pickers through meals and education scholarships, and heard from Joyce, co-founder and member of the Kenya Waste Pickers Welfare Association, alongside Solomon Njoroge—voices that grounded the experience in real, lived realities. There was also a hands-on moment: a weaving session with artisans using textile waste, showing how discarded materials can take on new life. But the day also highlighted deeper challenges: ♻️Respiratory health risks due to lack of protective gear ♻️Limited access to healthcare ♻️The need for stronger recognition of waste pickers’ role. This work goes beyond collection. It’s about reducing waste, extending the life of textiles, and supporting the people who keep the system moving. Every donation plays a part in that shift.
