La película puertorriqueña “Esta Isla” ganó el premio a Mejor Banda Sonora Original (Best Original Score) en el Festival de Cine Iberoamericano Cine Ceará en Brasil en marzo de 2026. Compuesta por Alain Emile @aemile , multiinstrumentista originario de Cabo Rojo y radicado en Los Ángeles. Hay una pieza de música original adicional (Social Dance) producida por Javo Grant, multi instrumentista puertorriqueño radicado en el Oeste de Puerto Rico. 🙏🏽📢 Gracias a @estaislafilm por la confianza y la oportunidad de ser parte de un legado para nuestra historia de país. For @whenbigpeoplelie we started very early. After going over @gianfranco_f_ruiz script and direction, we put together a demo/suite that would set the tone and musical language for the film. This post features a small excerpt from the demo.
Starting this early on a film is both a luxury and a creative boost. It not only gives me time to explore before everyone’s thinking about score, but it also gave G material that he then played on set during production and used as temp when starting the edit. This has become the standard when working with Gianfranco.
‘When Big People Lie’ will be playing 11/8 11:45am at @am_cinematheque@theculvertheater as part of @prooffilmfestival ‘s Age of Change block of shorts.

While working on Who is Michael Jang? I knew @mistahjacobs and @cworfolk were thinking of some drum cues for these big photo montages. I had not played drums in a while so I went to Pirate Studios to practice and brought a zoom recorder just in case.
I was so rusty, out of tempo and angry about it. I get home and not only did the drum sound from the zoom was great, but the chaotic sessions fit @michaeljangsf ‘s work in ways I could not recreate. The random, frustrating practice session ended up producing 3 cues for the doc.
Shoutout to @iarmusic3 for giving these drums a lil love before going out the door.

For @estaislafilm we were fortunate to have a recording session for our main theme. @soundsbyjason aka @_rumori is not only an incredibly talented artist, engineer and cello player, but he’a also pivotal to the experimental music scene here in LA. Jason’s always supported my musical projects and has given me space to perform. Welcoming me into the community. So when I realized we had time and budget for this piece, I was over the moon to be able to give him a call.
Extremely lucky to have My brother @elsanchize tag along for the session and documented the process, producing this beautiful cut. If you know Jason’s work, you understand how lucky we were to have him there.
This was a very unique score created in full collaboration with writer directors @lolalow & @ca_rretero which lead to both a deep sense of trust and the need to do justice to the incredible film they made.
Esta Isla premiered at the 2025 @tribeca festival taking home x3 wins: Best Cinematography US Narrative @shootdonttalk , Best New Narrative Director: @lolalow@ca_rretero , and the Jury Prize for US Narrative Feature.
