Hey there folks... Let's just be real for a minute. It's been a battle for me to create lately — like for over a year now. I've been in a strange funk that has kept me from sharing and creating new and old content. I've watched as a "current" post or story sat in draft mode for days... Then weeks... Then months... Like, I have stories 90% complete! ...just sitting there unfinished. Shameful. And this isn't something new. I have over a DECADE of these. The backlog of adventures is great but it's been burning a hole and stopping me from writing about new stuff. So in an attempt to address this creative block, I'm putting out a newsletter called Project Adventure Recall · new stories of old adventures. These directly support route development, community events and regional stewardship on the Great Rift Dirt Tour and throughout Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve! What does that mean? Well... This is a passion project. I've spent hundreds of hours developing this route and creating resources for riding it. I believe that's important – especially in this region. The logistics and remoteness make it very difficult. But it's an incredible place to travel through by bike and I want those who are able and capable to be able to do so. That's what motivates me to provide what I have learned and know about this region. However, I realize this route isn't for everyone. It's intimidating. It's advanced. And it demands a certain level of ability. I would like to keep learning and creating new routes that are more accessible to those who maybe don't have 5 days to dedicate... Or for those who don't have the capacity on their bike to carry 6-8 liters of water. Of course, if that is you right now and you're curious about riding a route like that, please reach out. From the dense coniferous woodlands of Island Park to the vast open sea of sagebrush that cover the Sand Creek Desert floor, just beyond the Henry's Fork Caldera, quiet backcountry roads travel through the ever-changing terrain. It's a region that lies largely unprotected, yet unexpectedly serene. I'm no geologist, but the idea of this once being on fire, flowing with lava, and now seeing it in its pure beauty and lush existence creates in me a cavern of love for this place. One can expect to encounter livestock, mostly bovine... Man's replacement of the bison that once roamed this region with a grand presence. One can also expect every animal you might see in Yellowstone National Park, while also being a home for many high desert-dwelling beings. And although potentially less frequent, this region is a critical winter and breeding grounds, and migration corridor for an overwhelming number of creatures. The abrupt meshing and blending of these ecosystems is one of the things that makes this land so unique. The bike is such a delightful way to experience this landscape, allowing one to cover ground quickly (but not too quickly) through the changes of terrain, and yet be quiet enough to hear the drumming of a Northern Flicker or the rattling bugle of a Sandhill Crane. So with that said, I have begun mapping out some routes in the area and have added them to @ridewithgps collections. You might remember hearing about the Pine & Sage Escapade which I shared about last year. This region is part of that. Some of these routes are now embedded on the Routes page at destinationreroute.com (🔗 link in bio). You're welcome to email me directly if you're looking for more curated route suggestions or have questions about one of the routes on the page. This Bishop Mountain Loop is a new one that is still in development, but mostly ready. There is a 45-mile variation available as well. The page is a work in progress, but this is a start with much better organization to come. Mid-week adventure rides 🔥❄️👀 ⏰ Every Tuesday, rolling @ 7 pm for some backyard shenanigans. We keep it fun, chill and mix it up – There's something for everyone! Last night we rolled from Sherman Park in Victor out Old Jackson Highway and up the Centennial Trail to Trail Creek Campground. From the paved path, Happy Hour looked questionable, but we were pleasantly surprised to find tacky conditions and no mud or slime! 🤙🏻🤘🏻 Even through the snow, it wasn't too bad – maybe a little walking to keep it interesting. Yesterday's @ridewithgps Spring Shakeout was wonderful! It was great to ride with you all and be a part of rich conversations and good vibes while rolling under the warm sunshine! My soul is full, my face is smiling, my legs are tired, and my skin is a little burnt. The "bike bus" style ride was a bit of an experiment and I definitely learned a few things for next time. Everyone seemed to enjoy the format, pace and conversations with one another, which is all I could have hoped for! Folks started in Victor, Driggs, Tetonia and Felt. Some peeled off at various points to shorten or modify their ride as needed. Our destination was the Bitch Creek Trestle on the Ashton-Tetonia Rail Trail. Cage-Free Yellowstone in the Spring Yellowstone is a special place — a place that has always healed me. To be healed by place is quite the feeling and I don't have the words to describe it — perhaps you do and would like to share – I invite you to do so in the comments. Right now the road is open to public foot and bike use, with minimal vehicle traffic on the roads (only Park staff and personnel) from West Yellowstone to Mammoth Hot Springs. We rode a total of 38 miles to Gibbon Falls and back last weekend, starting mid-afternoon and finishing last Sunday evening. To experience this wild landscape at a slower pace by bike is one tradition I hate to miss – it's also an incredible way to move through Yellowstone. Got the commuter rolling again 🙏🏻 just in time for some nice dry gravel and quiet paved back roads. The wind died down quite a bit today compared to what it's been... It was nice to NOT have 50 mph gusts today. Rode north and then west of town out to and along the river and looped into Driggs. Last night's ride was equivalent to a "pow day" on a fatbike—fresh duff on top of a hard user-packed or groomed, "fast rolling" surface underneath. Another Fat Tuesday score!
