Our Youth & Family Programs participants brought incredible energy to “Unity Through The Drum” 🥁 Hosted by the incredible @melanatimbera , this special evening celebrated Afro-Cuban music, culture, and connection through rhythm and shared experience. Throughout the program, youth explored traditional Afro-Cuban rhythms and their cultural significance, leading up to a vibrant final performance that filled the room with joy, movement, and powerful community spirit. We’re so proud of all the participants for their dedication and hard work. Special thanks to the @culture_la , Council District 8 (@mhdcd8 ), and @lpmusicofficial for supporting this meaningful program and helping make this experience possible through their partnership and drum donations.

This AANHPI Heritage Month, AADAP proudly honors Koreatown Youth and Community Center (KYCC) — an organization with a long-standing history of partnership and shared community impact alongside AADAP. Founded in 1975 as the Korean Youth Center (KYC), the organization was created to support the growing Korean American community in Koreatown through culturally relevant programs for youth and families, including after-school tutoring, summer enrichment, parent education, outreach, and prevention services. With the dedication of leaders like Rev. Paul Chun, Jane Kim, Inhwan Kim, Dr. Samuel Rhee, Ron Wakabayashi, and many others, KYC grew into an independent nonprofit organization in 1983 and eventually became KYCC. Today, @KYCCLA continues to uplift multicultural communities across Los Angeles through advocacy, education, and community care. We are proud to continue standing alongside KYCC in empowering and supporting AAPI communities. #AANHPIHeritageMonth #KYCC #AADAP #AANHPI #Koreatown #CommunityHealing #AAPICommunity

Our Community Integrated Prevention (CIP) Unit was invited back for the 2nd time to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month with the community at an event hosted by the @longbeachusd and @lbusdengage ! One major highlight was completing nearly 50 Community Needs Assessment (CNA) surveys from diverse AANHPI communities, including Cambodian, Japanese, Samoan, and many more. The feedback gathered will help strengthen culturally responsive support and services countywide. We were also excited to promote AADAP’s services, especially outpatient support, while providing education on current substance use disorder (SUD) trends and safe prescription medication disposal. Most importantly, we built meaningful new connections for future community events and presentation opportunities. Thank you to everyone who stopped by, shared their voices, and helped make this celebration impactful! #AAPIHeritageMonth #CommunityEngagement #AADAP #HealthEquity #LongBeach #Prevention #RecoverySupport

In recognition of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to thank nearly 100 community members who joined us at the inaugural Reclaiming Our Voices: Addressing Substance Use in the AA/NHPI Community convening. Substance use and mental health are closely connected and for AA/NHPI people these experiences are culturally unique and not a monolith. Through insightful research, inspiring personal stories, and perspectives from local government leaders, we deepened our collective understanding of a more equitable and responsive behavioral health care system for AA/NHPI communities. The program featured a presentation of recent qualitative research led by Dr. Warren T. Yamashita, AADAP Board Member and Director of Addiction Medicine & Family Physician at @harborchc , offering important insights into substance use and behavioral health within AA/NHPI communities. Read the full study here: /journaladdictionmedicine/pages/default.aspx We are especially grateful to Sophaon Som with @apiriselosangeles , Dr. Gary Tsai with @lapublichealth SAPC, Dr. Lisa Wong with @lacdmh and Councilmember Sharon Kalani for sharing their expertise, creating a meaningful space for connection, learning, and reflection. Special thanks to our co-hosts at @ltsc.cdc and Faith United Methodist Church for helping to make this gathering possible! It is through collaboration, that we begin to close the gaps in behavioral health disparities and ensure a future of healing and possibility for all AA/NHPI people.
