What is the face of our emotions? In 2019, mask maker Tony Fuemmeler @make_those_faces created a set of mask forms inspired by the six emotions whose expressions are theorized to be universally understood: Fear, Joy, Surprise, Anger, Sadness, and Disgust. Then he shipped artist collaborators around the world an unpainted papier-mâché mask based on one of the six expressions.
Collaborators were then tasked with “completing” this mask, in their own way. Art form, identity, style, experiences, history, aesthetic, nationality, and culture(s) were all explicitly invited to inform HOW they did so.
These finished masks comprise A UNIVERSAL FEELING, a collaborative investigation into how we show what we feel.
So many feelings about feeling.
On view at the @inkpeoplecenterforthearts Brenda Tuxford Gallery through Oct 25

“Heal and Polish” by MOsely WOtta. (@killyholiday ) Gold/Dirt/Ink/Tape .
.
“Once, a father took his two children beneath the world. There, the three of them came upon a village. As they watched from a hidden place this is what they saw: A Being of polish and healing. A face, covered in wounds and pus and lesions and cuts. This was tended to by the people of this village. They treated the wounds with maggots and bandages and tender attention. Restoring the flesh. Then they went away. Upon returning, they noticed the Being's face was covered in dirt and dust and rust. The villagers once again tended, this time with brushes and polish to shine and buff, until, the face shown a brilliant gold. “
