Thank you Andy, Tiffany, William, Joyous, Jordan, Gio, Stacia, Ryan, Chase, and Justin for a wonderful residency here at the Hermitage Artist Retreat!
Pictured:
1-3.) Results of day one versus day fourteen of my hunt for fossilized shark’s teeth* displayed with various mollusk and snail shells including the lovely Atlantic Turkey Wing (Arca zebra) and Giant Atlantic Cockle (Dinocardium robustus).
4-9.) Views from the historic Hermitage House and environs.
10-11.) Invasive species sightings on Manasota Key (dancer, troll, plushie bear, and defunct iguana).
*The fossilized teeth I found are from species including the Sand Tiger Shark (Carcharias taurus), Tiger Shark (Galeocerdo cuvier), extinct Snaggletooth Shark (Hemipristis serra), Bull Shark (Carcharhinus leucas), Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias), Lemon Shark (Negaprion brevirostris), extinct Hastalis Shark (Carcharodon hastalis), Longfin Mako Shark (Surus retroflexus), Dusky Shark (Carcharhinus obscurus), and Nurse Shark (Ginglymostoma lehneri) as far as I can tell.

Grateful to be back here at the Hermitage Artist Retreat historic site (greatly damaged, but amazingly still standing after it was hit by two devastating hurricanes in 2024) working on new material for my upcoming commission that will première at 92NY this fall.

I was hoping this was witch’s butter (Tremella mesenterica) that I spotted in the Hudson Highlands, but it may very well be orange jelly (Dacrymyces chrysospermus), which is sometimes also known as witch’s butter. In folkloric belief the appearance of witch’s butter was thought to indicate the presence of a curse or a spell (which could be broken by piercing the fungus with pins). In northern Europe it was burned to ward off evil spirits.

Thrilled to be leading the Performance Project course at Sarah Lawrence College (my Alma Mater) where I’ll be sharing two works, “8 Bagatelles” (première) and “Strand’s Kin” (a reconstruction of the second dance I ever made back when I was a student at Sarah Lawrence, inspired by Scottish faerie legends of the mysterious shapeshifting Selkies) in the Bessie Schönberg Theater on April 28th & April 29th, 2026 at 7:30pm. The works feature Sarah Lawrence College Dance Program students Julia Antinozzi, Kate Carpenter, Yifei Chen, Alexei Grytsenko, Marin Guitton, Samanvita Kasthuri, Ruby Mesas, Riley Mulder, Oska Pressman, Bo Robinson, Dahlia Shepherd, Fiona Scruggs, Nomi Wiersma, and Maisie Wieser and costumes by Kate Berger.
