If I can go back and tell that 10 year old girl who didnât speak English and moved to the United States of America and absolutely hated it that she was going to be ok, have a hard and beautiful life and one day be in the New York Times - she probably wouldnât believe it. Forever in shock and grateful for the incredible @efazzare who understood my work on so many levels and beautifully captured my story. Thank you to the @nytimes@grtnwilkins@squeakcarnwath and my love and support system @cdehenzel . The one OK photo out of hundreds made it as my portrait.

Portals of heritage - a conversation between Narsiso Martinez, Jessy Slim and bryant terry moderated by Cornelia Stokes exploring how land, labor and material histories shape their work.
Martinezâs drawings on discarded produce boxes foreground the often invisible labor of farmworkers; Slimâs chickpea-based sculptures use organic matter to encapsulate a material revisiting of trauma and transformation; and terryâs interdisciplinary practice bridges food, sculpture, and social action to examine cultural memory and collective nourishment.

Re-made this work for this current show and she nearly killed me, which is why her street name is Chickpea Landscapes, Big Drama Queen. Ya Ana Ya Ana is titled after one of my favorite Fairouz songs.
This piece is iteration#3 honoring my thesis piece and I have grown to love it.

It meant the world to see my work and have my first solo show at @roll_up_project . Squishy and I love to look at whatâs up in the windows on our morning walks when we come down to Jack London.
Iâll miss seeing the chickpeas shine bright at night and Iâm so thankful for Squeak Carnwath and Julia for the opportunity.
This new piece (left 6âx6â) challenged me so much both physically and mentally and Iâm sill kind of mad at it but itâs one of my babies and I do love it.
