»I Am Drawing to Resist Powerlessness«
Zeichenperformance von Noor us Sabah

»I Am Drawing to Resist Powerlessness«
Drawing performance by Noor us Sabah
August 6, 2025, from 4–7 PM, drop-in via the entrance of Galerie Wedding
»I Am Drawing to Resist Powerlessness« by Noor us Sabah is a drawing performance that takes place in the foyer of Rathaus Wedding.
Noor us Sabah draws the spaces of the Rathaus Wedding and thereby devotes herself to the architecture and its ideological background. Combined with the written records of Sabahs observations and sensations, this art practice creates a form of resistance against processes of alienation that operate on materialistic and psychological levels in institutions we depend on. Thus, making Sabah’s drawing practice an unruly act through which she emancipatively appropriates places and relationships.
The performance is curated by Philipp Hennch as part of the project »Transversalities«. Part of the project is a publication that will be released in collaboration with Erin Honeycutt (Cutt Press) this fall.

Kurator*innenführung durch die Ausstellung »If my neighbour is okay, I’m okay«
Donnerstag, 03.04.25, 19 Uhr

Why do we care for others at all? ‘If my neighbour is okay, I’m okay’ is the first answer but raises other questions such as who gets excluded while we include others?
As a former animal enclosure, the architecture of the Bärenzwinger Berlin conveys a particular understanding of care. Our upcoming spring exhibition kickstarts the Bärenzwinger’s 2025 program “Handle (with) Care” which also tackles the question what understandings of care resonate in our exhibition space.
The exhibition reflects upon the curatorial and artistic premises of the Bärenzwinger as a homebase for aspiring artists and curators and how we can foster a gentle, non-patronizing as well as inclusive practice of caring.
The different artistic positions of Edna Al-Najar, Belia Brückner, Ece Cangüden, and Elvis Osmanović address the spatial and material conditions of the Bärenzwinger against the backdrop of care-giving and care-taking.
The exhibition will feature a diverse range of workshops, artist talks, a guided tour by the curators, and a discourse format, with a special program taking place during Gallery Weekend (04/05/2025).

Last month I opened my first exhibition Within Me Outside, curated together with Joana Stamer @baerenzwinger.berlin . The duo-exhibition focusses on artworks by @rikescheffler and @tueluefueluekueluemuelue .
Through the exhibition in mir draußen (Within Me Outside), the Bärenzwinger Berlin spotlights poetry and the stories that unfold within it. The duo exhibition as part of the 2024 annual program KANTEN UND KNOTEN (Edges and Knots) combines spatial, video and sound installations by poets Nail Doğan and Rike Scheffler. Poetry as an installation interacts with the architecture of the former animal kennel. Language becomes expansive: inside and outside.
The title within me outside refers to how stories determine our lives and organize our coexistence. Stories establish connections, relations within and between individuals and other living beings. Networks of people, places, times as well as emotions, affects and ideas stand side by side and together form a composition. Questions of origin and identity can be posed here as well as considerations about their future development. Stories are incorporated in me, but are also a social phenomenon.
Stories thus offer the possibility of overcoming the boundaries of the body as well as the individual or collective horizon in order to turn dividing lines into connecting lines.
The exhibition is open until 28th of April 2024.

This year I'm again at the driving the human festival to have a look on the finished prototypes for eco-social renewal. So far I'm seeing non-human perspectives on the nature contract by Michel Serres in the work A Backpack of Wings by @jeolmyohan and @seongminyuk . Also, the relations of a complex network/assamblage unfolds in the Monsters and Ghosts of the Far North by @lenageertsdanau and @andrajurj . I'm curious what's next.

In the theory of Cornelius Castoriadis the Imagination has a reality-constituting and action-guiding role.
Following Condoleo, the imaginary, according to Castoriadis, is composed of the ability to envision things or relationships that are not actually present. The imaginary is different from reality and expresses itself symbolically in order to exist. "Castoriadis further distinguishes the radical imaginary from the actual imaginary and the symbolic. The radically imaginary is the underlying faculty of imagination. The radically imaginary is the prerequisite for something new to come into being, it is "creative action", the ability or possibility to envision new institutions and to organize new forms of coexistence. Castoriadis' actual imaginary, on the other hand, again corresponds to a certain imagining. For Castoriadis, material carriers of meaning are found, for example, at the level of the actual imaginary.
Through the imagination, a system of symbols is created that gives meaning to institutions and establishes meaning. This is the foundation of institutions. Under Institution Castoriadis summarizes a multiplicity of concepts. These include values, norms, language, tools, production processes, or individuals. "All in a society these distinguishing, ascertainable procedures and conceptions are crowded together in the term institution." Moreover, by re-imagining meanings, one can introduce new institutions.
Some ideas form a central meaning in institutions. The concept of economy, for example, corresponds to such an idea. Other meanings would refer to the symbol economy, through which action and thinking as well as perception of people is structured and organized. Through this, 'economy' becomes a social reality. The fact that symbol systems and thus the imaginary have such a great in-fluence on people's actions, perceptions and thoughts can be seen as having political potential.
