Rare Birds (2026) is premiering @tribeca I got to live out a personal dream in designing a film inside an antique shop. A reality brought to fruition by my amazing team @haze.rd , @mc.crum and Chase Mayo. What a joy to be able to share that “Noumena” by @niall.cunningham will have its premiere at @iffboston . Rejoining to make this, our second film with Niall, was a joy. This subtly powerful film about dissonance required the development of a new visual language and a lot of trust. “Annie”, our previous film together, a film about expansion and liberation from the constraints of one’s dreams, required an expansive and flowing approach. Our goal with Annie was to create an almost impossibly bucolic scene, packed with all of the quintessential items of the platonically imagined farm life. That visual opulence acted in contrast to the deteriorating relationship of our protagonists. In Noumena our approach had to be much more subtle, allowing emptiness and darkness to work with us and for us. On page one of the script Niall noted 3 things that acted as a tuning note for the production: - “human time” not “movie time” - What is within the frame + what is not. - What is seen + what is heard. The movie started the incomparable @lilliumm and @jacob_hubbard_anderson whose ability to continually surprise both each other and the audience on screen will never cease to amaze. The complex and subtle humor and pain they had to reflect was no short task. A massive thank you to the whole team, but especially @chilicunningham who produced the hell out of this film with her whole heart. @niall.cunningham thank you for trusting us, yet again. Two years ago, @theo_.matza came to @gusselsprout and I with Tate’s Parade, the core of which was a cramped, cartoonish apartment, built from scratch @rollinstudios . @haze.rd and I built and plastered the studio flats in our yard. @mike__bloom and @danelsorkin schlepped the set in pieces to the stage. And the dream team of @panicbuzzcut @he.harrison @cecewheels @gusselsprout @thadzash @ben_matza & Nicky Windolf pieced Tate’s world together with such remarkable creativity over the course of three extraordinary days. @willaschwabsky also designed such expressive costumes which enlinved the space as the characters jostled around the tiny apartment. Thank you to @theo_.matza for his unwavering trust. The film is now streaming on @nobudge !
