Rare Birds (2026) is premiering @tribeca I got to live out a personal dream in designing a film inside an antique shop. What a joy to be able to share that “Noumena” by @niall.cunningham will have its premiere at @iffboston . Rejoining to make this, our second film with Niall, was a joy. This subtly powerful film about dissonance required the development of a new visual language and a lot of trust. “Annie”, our previous film together, a film about expansion and liberation from the constraints of one’s dreams, required an expansive and flowing approach. Our goal with Annie was to create an almost impossibly bucolic scene, packed with all of the quintessential items of the platonically imagined farm life. That visual opulence acted in contrast to the deteriorating relationship of our protagonists. In Noumena our approach had to be much more subtle, allowing emptiness and darkness to work with us and for us. On page one of the script Niall noted 3 things that acted as a tuning note for the production: - “human time” not “movie time” - What is within the frame + what is not. - What is seen + what is heard. The movie started the incomparable @lilliumm and @jacob_hubbard_anderson whose ability to continually surprise both each other and the audience on screen will never cease to amaze. The complex and subtle humor and pain they had to reflect was no short task. A massive thank you to the whole team, but especially @chilicunningham who produced the hell out of this film with her whole heart. @niall.cunningham thank you for trusting us, yet again. Only a few days left to support @isthatallfilm !!! (Link in bio!!!) Practicals 3rd collaboration with @stellagatti is searing and honest look at fame and power told through the story of a young woman over the course of one night. A night gone both perfectly right and absolutely wrong. It’s an empathetic and honest tale that touches on the complicated and often contradictory realities that are overlooked in most stories in the genre. With “Is that all?” Our visual approach is in many ways guided by the principle of finding our way - helping make sense of a dark and abusive yet alluring underworld. Jack Fisk is the wizard!!! @crudoasc we agree with you and @dkhondji , production designers are way under recognized in the world of cinematography, our collaboration is essential and uniquely intertwined. We foreground this collaboration in indie film making, hoping to change the way young people approach new work.

We’re excited to share that @the.moth.film will be premiering at the @thedowntownfestival on October 12th! Directed by @jpriveragarza ! It was a great pleasure to be able to work on this project with long term @practicals.nyc collaborators @willaschwabsky and @sweetbbjane whose work was vital to each and every frame of this film. Both Willa’s and Jane’s work is always a revelation and it’s always a joy to work with them.

@practicals.nyc is proud to share a first look at “Fun” Directed by Kitty Samuels @thadzash . It’s a film that stands not only as one of our proudest collaborations, but as the most healing. We (Gus and Theo) are so excited to share @twin.flamefilm with the world on Sunday, October 13th at New York Shorts. It’s an honor to have been invited to collaborate with @stellagatti for a second time with this film that is so close to her heart, and to continue our own collaboration with each other.
