After 14 years of saying “I should really get back into oil painting,” I finally decided to this August. It was during an industry shutdown, the aftermath of a 3-year relationship, an attempt to expand my queer circle of friends and I have to say it is one of the best things I’ve ever decided to do. This is a painting of Freddy from October in various stages. He is tiny and insane and very dapper and encouraging. It is the first time I surprised myself at how much I learned in such a short time. Oil painting is a lot like sculpting - the medium allows you to push and pull pigments in a way that feels like moulding clay. Siren -based on a project from eons ago based on Debussy’s Sirenes. Starting digital rendering is a huge learning curve, especially as someone who is so used to the feel of pen, paper and paint - but I feel like I’m getting down the toolset to create textured images that can go farther than what I can accomplish in paint.

We’re all tired and overworked. We explain why we need more time, resources and manpower and get a “too bad” too often. We are expected to work for free to keep up with schedule changes. I have not sat down to eat in 8 years while on a job and i am not even on the shooting crew. Good creative work comes when people are treated like humans and are able to sleep, eat, get off their feet and stop for 5 minutes to think. I support a strike. If not now, when? #iasolidarity
