If the first Collector’s Edition cover of the May/June issue of The Magazine ANTIQUES channels the exuberance of the archive, the second moves at a different tempo—quieter, cooler, composed with elegant restraint by my brilliant friends Ella and Nathan of
@__studiosamuel__ .
For this design, exclusive to newsstands, we looked to the magazine’s mod covers of the late 1960s and early 70s, during a different phase in Milton H. Glover’s long tenure as art director. Glover experimented widely, but one of his most enduring formats is on view here: a minimalist frame, a single image, and the kind of visual contrast that subtly emphasizes the historical character of the objects depicted.
There is always a humanistic gesture in Ella and Nathan’s work, and here it takes the form of my monogram, which I did not request, but happily accept, with gratitude and some amusement!
The image, photographed by the wonderful
@arikellerman , shows a group of British mochaware arrayed in a nineteenth-century New England apothecary cabinet. The collection, featured in the issue, belongs to a Maine state employee who assembled it, an object or two at a time, over the course of fifty-five years. A portrait in patience, you might say, and a reminder that meaningful collections are built slowly, and open to anyone with curiosity and care—regardless of budget.
If you’d like to receive a copy of the Collector’s Edition (and you should), there’s a friends-and-family subscription offer in my bio: 74% off the cover price, which feels less like a discount and more like a public service!
Now that you’ve seen our dual covers, we’ll talk about what’s inside them—soon. MDG
