Emily Thurman and Kevin Morby
present THE BELLS
Salt Lake City and New York–based designer Emily Thurman makes her Paris debut at Atelier Alterio, the former live-work space of Argentinian painter Ruben Alterio, opening its doors to the public for the first time.
For CONTRIBUTIONS, and with the support of Antwerp design gallery, ST VINCENTS, Thurman introduces the “Mother’s Love” Rocking Chair and “Cheer up, for you are so young” Rocking Stool, each adorned with a constellation of bells – some gathered from around the world, others sculpted by Thurman herself – strung together by Paris-based silversmith Zoé Mohm. Alongside, she presents works from her inaugural collection Hundō, whose name recalls the proto-Italic word for “foundry,” evoking both the act of casting and the devotion of pouring oneself fully into creation.
The installation is accompanied by an original composition from Kansas City–based musician Kevin Morby, who drew inspiration directly from Thurman’s practice, played in the space through a speaker by French high-fidelity manufacturer La Boîte concept, the festival’s official audio partner. To create the piece, Thurman mailed Morby three of the bells that constitute her new works, which he wove into the composition – their harmonies vibrating alongside piano, echoing the drift of Paris itself: music from cafés, buskers in the métro, and the sounds of the city spilling through its windows.
