to regenerate or conserve? by @_natalie.irene_ hand sketches, bricks, australian ferns and printed photographs “the sydney suburb of redfern has a significant and storied cultural legacy for first nations communities. it also has a noteworthy heritage footprint, with many regency style terraces inherited from colonial ideologies. this project seeks to examine the tension between the indigenous and colonial history of the area by shifting the focus of conservation from the built environment to the natural, opting to regenerate the land instead of preserving the architecture. the result imagines how this shift can assist in connecting us to place and country.” this work was displayed at overlay, exhibited as part of melbourne design week, from may 24-26. images by @laura.may.grogan and @sarahforgiephoto #overlaymdw #melbournedesignweek #ngv

terrace house by @austinmaynardarchitects looping video featuring footage by @archimarathon and images by @derek_swalwell and @maitreya.chandorkar here displayed is a 1:27 excerpt of 3:38 total length ‘australians love to live in houses with backyards, a suburban dream that has led to sprawling cities. with a rising population and worsening housing crisis, this aspiration needs an update. austin maynard architects has developed a response guided by an australian classic. situated in a heritage overlay, terrace house borrows spatial and emotional elements from the terrace house format and translates them into a sustainable way of living in higher density. the references that were retained allow for a connection to the past, whilst being built for the future. this work was displayed at overlay, exhibited as part of melbourne design week, from may 24-26. #overlaymdw #melbournedesignweek #ngv

overlay was presented by @cj.cornish and @locki.humphrey . ‘the concept emerged from conversations we were having on our walks around the northern suburbs of melbourne. how can these areas adapt to modern housing needs, when the australian heritage aesthetic is such a beloved one?’ image by @laura.may.grogan

‘a heritage reclaimed’ by maryam moghadam and keedan rigney @mar_yammo_ghadam @corneliuspaint spotted gum, red gum, jarrah, myrtle, sassafras, huon pine, victorian ash, blackbutt, queensland walnut, brass 600Wx 600Lx 1300mmH “a heritage reclaimed” invites the audience to search beyond the façade of heritage buildings and bring forward the history heritage guidelines failed to acknowledge. inside the cabinet, a triptych constructed from reclaimed native australian timber reveals a snapshot of harmonious living prior colonisation, the displacement and genocide of first nations people during colonisation, and a future where first nations people displaced from culture and country can return home, practice culture, learn language and find their family. this work was displayed at overlay, exhibited as part of melbourne design week, from may 24-26. images by @sarahforgiephoto and @laura.may.grogan #overlaymdw #melbournedesignweek #ngv

‘vascular’ by @braveneweco edwardian, victorian and postwar mouldings dulux heritage paints manufactured in bayswater by karem woodcraft supported by @duluxaus skirtings are the vascular system connecting disparate elements of a building’s interiority bordering the traditional programming of distinct rooms. the inversion of this formality creates apertures and disruptions. opportunities to terminate, transition, or extrude the forms arise. Interventions made are responsive, honouring context without overriding or reproducing. designs emerge in relationship to observation. original and new mouldings collated onsite can thread together the divergent narratives from present, past and future. this work was displayed at overlay, exhibited as part of melbourne design week, from may 24-26. images by @sarahforgiephoto #overlaymdw #melbournedesignweek #ngv

overlay was held in a beautiful building in fitzroy, 181 brunswick st, situated within a heritage overlay. the space embodied many central themes of the exhibition; full of nostalgia, charm and century-old materials but beyond its facade it remains suspended between preservation and disrepair. we loved this space, thanks to @hawkerspaces for hosting us 🖤 image by @laura.may.grogan

‘pub?’ by @dilbwebs ‘with social media acting as an archive, text is taken from a digital discourse provoked by the paint colour of a pub. prompted by a council meeting topic, the community shares thoughts, opinions, information, and interpretation. without intention, the collective understanding of “heritage” is debated, and the use of the word becomes scrutinized. how is change managed, and who has the authority to participate?’ this work was displayed at overlay, exhibited as part of melbourne design week, from may 24-26. images by @laura.may.grogan and @sarahforgiephoto #overlaymdw #melbournedesignweek #ngv

our friends at @brickworksbp donated 400 bricks to overlay, their beautiful nubrik ‘brunswick laneway blue’ was featured on our central plinth and window displays. inspired by the character and rustic charm of melbourne’s famous back streets and laneways. with their inner city character and sometimes bold colour variations, this double sided brick can show manufacturing marks and kiln burns that reflect the age-old authenticity of the materials. made using traditional presses, each brick has an authentic look and a genuine presence to give an age-old grounding to even the most contemporary of applications. the entire nubrik range has obtained the declare label. the declare label depicts nubrik’s end of life options as salvageable/reusable in its entirety, and 100% recyclable. made to last a lifetime. longevity is a powerful sustainability benchmark – and one that literally builds a positive legacy into projects. exhibited as part of melbourne design week, from may 24-26. images by @laura.may.grogan #overlaymdw #melbournedesignweek #ngv

‘heritage, introspect’ by @studio.a.mi heritage, introspect presents 2 hypothetical interior renovations of a heritage home, and through these designs explores potential interpretations of heritage as a concept. each design transforms the house to be better suited for a modern lifestyle, and explores the possibilities for quality design using only locally designed and manufactured products. the outcomes reveal how we might engage with heritage renovations in a more meaningful way, producing homes that are both environmentally and philosophically considered. this work was displayed at overlay, exhibited as part of melbourne design week, from may 24-26. images by @sarahforgiephoto and @sarahpannell #overlaymdw #melbournedesignweek #ngv
