Quand la matière devient mémoire vivante Du 7 au 20 février, les Ateliers Coffi ont accueilli la restitution du projet 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲̀𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲̀𝗿𝗲𝘀 de l’artiste Marwen Ben Cheikh, réalisée dans le cadre de la résidence Inspiration Bénin – au Cœur des Mondes Africains. À travers une installation-performance, l’artiste a proposé une exploration sensible de la matière comme archive active. Par l’observation, la fouille et l’agencement, son travail révèle ce qui persiste sous les surfaces visibles et comment ces fragments continuent d’habiter nos espaces et nos récits contemporains. Pensée comme un protocole ouvert, cette restitution a mis en circulation matériaux, sons, archives et gestes. Ensemble, ils ont fait émerger des strates de mémoire, des tensions et des formes en devenir, invitant le public à une expérience immersive au cœur du processus de recherche artistique. 06.02.2026 - Matières Premières Etape de recherche / Restitution @lesatelierscoffi , Cotonou Tout commence par un déplacement. Un pas de côté dans le temps. Matières Premières est né dans cet écart. Pendant plusieurs semaines, nous avons collecté des fragments de ville : bois, métal, textile, poussière, voix, souvenirs. Des matières simples considérées comme déchets devenues archives d’un futur possible. Le 06 février, la capsule s’est ouverte aux Les Ateliers Coffi. La terre a été déplacée. Les corps se sont approchés. Les objets ont refait surface. Un espace de fouille, de mémoire et de projection. Un geste collectif. Ce qui est mis de côté ne disparaît pas. La matière se transforme, se déplace, sédimente. Elle conserve des usages, des tensions, des gestes inscrits dans le temps. 𝗠𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗲̀𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗲̀𝗿𝗲𝘀 est un projet de recherche de 𝗠𝗮𝗿𝘄𝗲𝗻 𝗕𝗲𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗸𝗵 qui explore la matière comme archive active. 06/09 @darmeso_residency DROWNING work in progress Thank you for being with us and for sharing this first step of the project. The aim of this moment was to let you experience, through performance, sound, visual and installation, different emotions of the state of DROWNING. We wanted to see if what we imagined, felt, and created could truly reach you and open a space beyond daily time, a space to question and reflect. This is only the beginning. More is coming, and we will share with you how the project evolves until it reaches its final form. A big thank you to this fierce team, soon to expand, who committed themselves fully from the moment they felt the urgency of the work. Together we lived DROWNING, we shared it, we discussed it, and we will keep refining it to make it whole. I’m also deeply grateful to Dar Meso, this unique place outside of time that gave me the safety and freedom to dive into the project. Meeting Youssef and @florence_vieira , discovering their vision and care, and being surrounded by the residents made it possible for me to gather the fragments and map a clearer path for the work. DROWNING is a state. A threshold where identity, direction, and breath dissolve into suspension. It carries the weight of being submerged. After 40 days of residency, we are happy to invite you to Marwen Ben Cheikh end of residency showcase on Saturday September 6th 2025 at 8pm in Dar Meso Bab Souika. This piece was born from moments where everything felt suspended: identity, direction, speech, even breath. The moments where you’re no longer falling, but not yet grounded. Where nothing collapses dramatically, but things quietly loosen and blur. DROWNING is a shared space for that feeling. It’s not a show. It’s a state. A place where everything becomes fluid: the sound, the light, the body, the time. In this work in progress, attendents will be submerged by sound and video and will have the time to delve into the state that the latters will provoke in them. Currently in residency @darmeso_residency , I was invited to share a moment with the artist Elodie Gabillard, exploring the raw and intimate process of analog photography. So proud to finally see “Addis Fikir” (Addis Love) hitting the screens. First episode of the anthology series airs this Monday, 07.04.2025 at 9PM (GMT+3) on @aboltv_official and @dstv_ethiopia . It all kicked off from an idea @besufekademulu brought up and developed talking about love in a place like Addis Ababa in Ethiopian context. When I met Leul @loelshoaferaw and @ethiopian_records Endeguena, we dove deep into how love can say a lot about a city and how people live it, feel it, survive it. I had the chance to work on two episodes as sound engineer and foley artist, and it was a real trip: challenging, intense, full of moments where I had to listen, adapt, and grow. Got welcomed into a crew of creators, real ones, doing the work with heart and precision. Big respect to the whole prep and shoot team, you held it down. And special shoutout to Eyosi @yj_377 , the smooth boom operator holding that mic like it was part of him. Was a blessing to be out there with you. Through it all, I got to know a different Addis. LOwproFILe EP — Out Now on Bandcamp, SoundCloud, Spotify & Apple Music _ LOwproFILe emerged during a time when I felt distanced from myself, caught in a sense of disconnection and uncertainty. I felt scattered, like the pieces of sound I kept collecting: fragments of unfinished ideas, lost recordings, forgotten instruments. In that quiet space, music, my ever-listening companion and dear friend, was my way back. I stepped away, not to disappear, but to face that fragmentation and start rebuilding, piece by piece. I embraced the thought of imperfection as a starting point. It felt honest. Every sample, every loop, carried traces of past versions of myself. Digging through old files, dusty CDs, and neglected instruments, I found sounds that felt like remnants of who I had been. By cutting, layering, and recomposing them, I could shape a body out of what was already there, a new form that held all the fractures, not as flaws, but as integral parts of that entity. Beat-driven tracks are binding everything together: samples, field recordings, live instruments. Every track was an act of reconstruction, a way to reconnect scattered parts of myself through rhythm and texture. This EP is about reclaiming that reconstruction. It’s not a polished narrative or a neatly resolved story. It’s the sound of trying, of taking ownership of the nonlinear process of becoming.
