OPEN CALL: We are excited to announce the third edition of our exhibition series, APT: Thresholds. Thresholds, physical boundaries to be traversed; a threshold, a moment of recognition. Thinking about the works from previous years... like @stanleytilyardfrench ’s criss-crossing pulley wires drawing new trajectories through the space, or the refrigerator livestreams showing the invisible networks layered into our homes... the artworks situated themselves at these transitions, revealing this year’s theme. The show has been evolving, from being about apartments as artspaces, to looking at technology through domestic space. This year, we center documentation and critical reflection with an accompanying publication, setting the shows within the broader context of exhibition histories and creating an archive of the artists who have been a part. APT: Thresholds invites artists to submit work for this special exhibition, exploring the thresholds of a home and the ways they are dissolved or recognised. Open Call info at aptexhibitions.com or in the link in bio. #opencall

Highlights from the last month at the Tate and a few thoughts. After a day's workshops finished, I appreciated the chance to linger and see everything in the collections with my friends - I felt lucky to be together with the very people who ground and inspire me. πŸ’› The Ed Atkins at Tate Britain, for a mainly screen-based show, was visceral and tactile; it was great to see it's display. The Do Ho Suh exhibition would warm anyone who's lived in multiple countries/continents. Extremely tender and tenacious. We returned to 'Gathering Ground' in the 4th floor collections multiple times; there was always a soft landing into Abbas Zahedi's Begin Again. There's something about being surrounded by small altars of fruit; Edgar Calel's Echo of an Ancient Form of Knowledge, is a simple gesture that spans many dimensions. My friend drew my attention to an interesting aspect of the work; the institution's (Tate's) role in facilitating new models of collecting and decolonizing through custodianship of the work. It got me thinking about how this applies more broadly in society, to cultural stewardship. Understanding all the complex areas of AI - its mechanisms, invisible labor, ethics, environmental, technopolitics, authorship, creativity - is essential groundwork to develop a practice that anticipates and avoid the kinds of violences arising from fast-adopted technologies that no one understands. It's one of the main take aways from this residency and it's great to have been a part of this programme. Thank you for having me ✨ @annie.a.bicknell from @tate @dia_mond_rf @_nate_bliss_ @jchwenger @robinleverton @goldsmithscomparts @gold.computing

take 1, epoch 1 (2025) multimedia: video clips of Rossini's William Tell Overture excerpt, PRiSM sampleRNN neural audio synthesis model, text shortened edit for instagram take 1, epoch 1 is a dialogic work presented in the final showcase of the @Tate residency. The video piece places audition-takes in counterpoint to audio checkpoints of a machine-learning model-in-training. Depicting two trajectories moving towards each other ... performer and model both, train towards a particular goal. Alongside, a booklet documents an artistic inquiry; an interview, in which topics such as vulnerability, authenticity, and embodiment are touched upon through the perspectives of two "highly-trained" subjects, Claude @anthropicai and myself. In the dialogue with Claude, I treated the LLM not as a tool, but as an equal and a phenomenon. I sought to unbind the conversation, challenging the algorithm's tendency toward mimicry, ecstatic acknowledgement, and nonsubjective descriptions of "what it's like." Some obvious ticks appeared but it was also interesting; a few excerpts are shared in a following post. I've never felt the desire to share my cello-playing in any new work; of course it still feels vulnerable, but mainly, it's been difficult to define my playing voice and embodied gesture as a technology or a medium; to incorporate it into a work, it has to make integral sense. During this residency, it's been good to work with AI as a critical/conceptual framework for social, philosophical questions. Machine learning has a particular resonance when thinking about it alongside my experience as a classical musician. It has been a meaningful lens to ponder the trajectories of William Tell's arrow, the ML training, and my pursuit of the 'perfect' audition. #neuralaudiosynthesis #machinelearningart #prismsamplernn #LLMresearch #criticalAI #aiethics #humanmachinedialogue #creativeprocess #cello #dialogicart #contemporaryartwork #performanceart #tate #artresidency #emergingartist #artisticinquiry #creativepractice

cadeauX (exquisite gift), November 2024 Installation: Stable Diffusion, bone china, hand-made letterpress book cadeauX presents a series of surreal dinners. Plated on bone china, each dish is accompanied by a corresponding recipe bound within an β€˜old’ cookbook. The cookbook is reminiscent of 18th century cookbooks written by women of the aristocracy*, but on closer look, the recipes show a glimpse into the life of an AI-wife who instructs her β€˜servants’ on how to cook in Stable Diffusion. For this exhibition, I developed the prompts-as-recipes and bound them into a letterpress book. For me, using traditional materials and processes alongside modern ones here traces a timeline of technology’s progress. The printing press and AI (what I’ll call it until I land on a more suitable term) are technologies similar in the scale of their effect on the world, particularly, on knowledgeβ€”who has access to it, who creates it, who deems it knowledge. Exhibited at AlghaWorks Hackney Wick, β€˜A Body To Which We All Belong’ November 2024 It was a pleasure to be a part of this exhibition, thank you so much πŸ’› @annthony.w @willemworld @oliver.james.hunt @servingthepeople London. To those who came, I am grateful for all the wonderful, insightful feedback! πŸ™ cadeauX is work-in-progress towards a full book and series of plates made with heritage/artisan bone china-making processes. *reference: The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy (1747, Hannah Glasse) #artandtechnology #feministtechnoscience #recipes #cookbook #letterpress #artistbook #bookarts #bonechina #generativeai #stablediffusion #London #artexhibition

I’m pleased to present my installation, CadeauX in 'I & Thou', an exhibition bringing together artworks that examine interconnection within a hyper-individualistic society. CadeauX is based on an ongoing series of dinners that began in January 2024. As a response to the question of what they should bring, guests were asked to β€˜bring an ingredient for the next guest to enjoy’. The dinners have become a game; rules define that guests do not know who came before or comes after, and the ingredient is treated as a feature of the menu cooked. The chain of ingredients gifted anonymously between guests provided the prompt for collaborative image-making with Stable Diffusion, a text2img model. Whimsical plates of food are portrayed as cadeaux exquis, making a connection with the Surrealist game in which a bizarre and intuitive drawing is created between hidden artists. Developing the concept, recipes become a feature of this installation. Eddie Shepherd @eddiesheps , of the Walled Gardens, wrote a recipe from his interpretation of this output image, and text2img prompts translated into recipe format depict a view into new creative processes with AI. The use of these mediums – food and technology – highlight a hyperlocal approach to life through the way we respond to a set of circumstances, and emphasises collaboration and co-creation in the loops of human-human and human-nonhuman exchange. This project will continue its dinners, unfolding stories, research, recipes and artefacts online. Developing on an earlier, intimate installation that combined a sound score with projected visuals and assemblage, this expanded version creates a space of permeability between ordinary and extraordinary and a place of shared experience. The audience gathers around a celestial pomegranate and a communal bowl filled with a mountain of pomegranate seeds. The score describes the phenomenality of peeling a pomegranate - its colours, sounds, and texture, entwined with the notion of care over stains and damage. As time passes the rhythm of the peeling slips us into flow, into another state of mind. Recordings of pomegranate peelings used in this soundscore include ways-of-peeling shared by others, most noticeably, one peeled in a bowl of water. In this space, the activity is no longer a solo moment, the listener hears another’s what-it’s-likeness joining in. Listeners are welcome to touch the installation and participate at a certain point in the performance.

A belated thanks to the Computer Arts Society and the BCS who invited a few of us @goldsmithscomparts for EVA London in July. I had the opportunity to give my first conference talk, publish a paper, and exhibit POMOGRANATE again. Phenomenal Consciousness and Immersive Installation described preliminary thinking on this aspect of self-knowing in connection with immersive/interactive art. Thank you to everyone I met and for such quality experiences and a wonderfully supportive atmosphere! @computerartssoc @weare_bcs @evalondonconf #consciousness #immersiveart #installation #computationalart #touchdesigner #maxmsp

We are pleased to invite you to a large group exhibition created in the setting of a private home, presenting an alternate way to experience an artwork and interrogate that which hits closest to home. Across the 17 works and performances, what emerges are the visceral ways in which second order relationships intertwine with familiar objects and experiences. Rather than providing the space to reflect on what you do in the home, these works provide the space to reflect on that reflection. An innocuous trip to the snack cupboard results in a surprising moment of self-awareness. A furniture object is usurped by the relationship we have with our body. Rituals of soothing are re-presented with humor and caricature. Watch who watches themself sleep restlessly in a matroyshka nest of anxiety and bureaucracy that keeps us up at night. Engage with simulacra mediated by machine learning as dreamy reconstructions of memory lost through space, time, and body. Though the artists use a range of mediums from wood, copper, wire, wax, fabric, to sound and movement to express their ideas, the works are threaded through their connection to new media and technologies. Artwork involving and critiquing technology presents us not with the immediacy of the phenomenological now, but the immanence of the mediatized relationship that is becoming. As we layer interface between ourselves and the environments we inhabit, we dance with the meta-relationships we form with objects, as animate responders with which we connect and view diffracted versions of ourselves. Encounter the familiar and immediate as well as a space of auto-voyeurism, reflecting on what you do in the home, as the home watches you and understands itself in response. Additional info and tickets at the link in bio.
