Hiii, essay incoming…
Tbh the start to this year has been a rocky one. This year marks 10 years since I quit my desk job to freelance doing music and ngl it has been one of the most challenging eras within that so far.
Not because of the direction in which my project is taking, (because I genuinely feel like I’m working on things I’m most proud of and are the most meaningful to me) but, because of how the landscape of this industry has changed since 2016 and subsequently how my relationship to that has changed.
I find being so present online difficult. I am not shy, I am not quiet, I am not low in self confidence, but I am private. I have a point of view, feel free and open to share parts of myself, what I think and feel to people in my life irl but I find it feeling contrived and inauthentic for me when sharing online. I am still working out exactly why that feels that way for me, (I think the adhd/autism diagnosis I received in the last few months has something to do with it) but I also think it has something to do with how whatever I share/post has an underlying feeling of, ‘I need to sell and participate within capitalism (and patriarchy) and how do I express this authentically and true to myself’. I’ve found *that* part, hard. Finding my online identity is a whole journey. I’m still working that out.
What I feel is necessary is that I probs just need to be honest and unafraid of being perceived. I mean, everyone’s got so much shit going on and so much information being thrown at them, let me just express myself and see if it means something to someone.
Soooo here’s my next project out into the world (in a couple of weeks). It’s something I really believe in, stepping slightly outside of the sounds I’ve been making so far and just following my intuition.
It feels weird to be like here are the parts of myself so pls support my art, but here are parts of myself, I hope some of it resonates with you and I hope the music can make things a bit better.
