"Non Fiction" is a lyrical documentary series that explores the porous boundary between reality and fiction in photography. Images based on rumours, chance encounters and local news stories accumulate and coalesce to form a narrative that is fluid and multidirectional. La série d’image a été réalisée dans le cadre du Festival Planche Contact @planchescontactfestival 2022 à Deauville. Texte de Mariama Attah @mariama_attah , graphisme réalisé par Melanie Mues, Mues Design London @melaniemues Un polar photographique mettant au défi notre sens du réel “Donner au réel la couleur et la force narrative de la fiction”, telle était l’ambition de Truman Capote quand il écrivit De Sang Froid (1966), l’histoire vraie d’un quadruple homicide dans le Kansas. C’est ce point de départ que prend Non Fiction, une série à la fois documentaire et lyrique qui explore la frontière entre le réel et le fictif en photographie, frontière aujourd’hui de plus en plus poreuse (faits alternatifs, deep fake, I.A., etc.). La prémisse est simple : comment photographier le monde tel qu’il nous apparaît, au gré de rencontres fortuites, et en retournant sur les lieux de faits divers parus dans les journaux locaux pour créer une série qui s’apparente à une fiction ? Créée en 1999, Le Bec en l’air est une maison d’édition indépendante spécialisée en livres de photographie.  Son catalogue s’articule autour de plusieurs thèmes : photographie, art, littérature, patrimoine, guides de balades… Un point commun réunit pourtant la plupart du temps ses publications : le dialogue entre l’image et le texte, entre photographie et récit, à travers une mise en page contemporaine et des photographies d’auteur. Non Fiction by Henri Kisielewski @______henri “To give truth the colour and narrative force of fiction,” this was Truman Capote’s ambition when he wrote “In Cold Blood”, the true account of a quadruple homicide in 1960s Kansas. This is the starting point for Non Fiction, a work of lyrical documentary that explores the porous boundary between fact and fiction in photography. The premise is simple: is it possible to photograph the world as it is – through chance encounters and local news stories – and create a series that feels like fiction? Since its beginnings, photography has had a complex relation to truth: even the most ‘objective’ portraits will necessarily involve decisions relating to location, light and pose. In Non Fiction, this tension is pushed to its extreme through a variety of visual strategies, deployed to blur the lines. In the current context of conspiracy theories, fake news and AI generated imagery it is more pertinent than ever to reflect on our relationship with reality and how it is mediated through images. In Non Fiction images based on chance encounters accumulate and coalesce, forming a narrative that is fluid and multidirectional. It is up to the audience to interpret this narrative, to find keys into it. Framed in this way, daily life is transformed: every window hides secrets, every person becomes a protagonist, every object becomes a clue or a piece of evidence.
