MEMORY 10 : Zia Anger’s MY FIRST FILM
December 12th @ Now Instant Image Hall + Q&A w/ Zia Anger
To celebrate a decade of work in the art of moving image, MEMORY is presenting its most recent collaboration with artist Zia Anger. Anger’s debut feature MY FIRST FILM is based on a live performance piece by the same name first performed in Los Angeles by Anger in 2018. Six years later she returns to present this latest iteration of the project, a lyrical auto-critique that probes the nature of artistic truth and personal myth-making. Starring Odessa Young in the lead role of Vita.
Presented with a curated selection of short films and a post-screening conversation with Zia Anger and the team at MEMORY.
Tickets available now. (Link in bio)

Picture a typical movie poster.
One featuring a young woman looking away, like she’s ready to leave.
It’s beautiful, and makes you want to watch it.
Unfortunately, you never will.

“I think sometimes you just feel like you gotta make something. You’re just crazy about it and that’s something that I feel very strongly about. I gotta finish this or I gotta keep going with this. I have to keep going with that. That was that feeling, that urge to make something unparalleled in my life. Literally unparalleled. Maybe it was equal to the urge to get a dog. That’s it, that’s it. Those two urges are very strong.” #ZiaAnger

We’re delighted to announce that our UK Premiere screening of @zfoa ’s MY FIRST FILM will be followed by a Q&A with the wonderful Joe Bini, who edited the film.
Tickets in bio or at cnfw.co.uk
Joe’s editing credits are numerous: he worked with Werner Herzog for two decades and has collaborated with filmmakers from Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here, We Need to Talk About Kevin), Andrea Arnold (American Honey, Bird), and Laura Poitras (All the Beauty and the Bloodshed). His nonfiction work is so distinctive partly because he approached documentary almost by accident when he began working with Herzog; he was initially always interested in working in fiction. Perhaps informed by that, his work is always driven by a strong sense of character and story, whatever the form.
As a filmmaker, Joe has also co-created multiple live cinema projects, such as A THOUSAND THOUGHTS (with @sam_b_green ) and LITTLE ETHIOPIA (with @mayadaisyhawke ). We were instantly intrigued when we heard he and Zia Anger were collaborating on her feature continuation of MY FIRST FILM, a story that began its life as a live performance.
The result is a film that does not care for the perceived boundary between the truth and construction; a piece of autofictional filmmaking that follows its instincts to whatever images best express Anger’s personal journey.
We’re so excited to present the film to UK audiences for the first time on August 31, and to have Joe in attendance to speak to Anger’s and his own approach to creative nonfiction.
If you can’t make our screening, the film will play once more in London on September 5 at @thecastlecinema via @girlsinfilm_gif , before it drops on @mubi the next day.

Girls in Film are very excited to partner with @mubiuk and @thecastlecinema to bring you Zia Anger’s MY FIRST FILM.
Young filmmaker, Vita, revisits her first chaotic attempt at filmmaking 15 years prior. Shooting a semi-autobiographical film starring her friend Dina, Vita’s eager but inexperienced approach causes the production to spiral into chaos, leading to significant disruptions and a near-fatal accident.
