Today on #LawyersDay, I thank the lawyers + advocates w/ whom I’ve collaborated to create artwork advancing socio-economic justice. A big life highlight: Created in collab w/ workers and lawyers at
@domesticworkers , The NannyVan (2013-2016) was birthed after the U.S.’s first Domestic Workers Bill of Rights passed in NY, a law which inspired workers to organize and pass laws in their states. Along with my newborn son, my team and I traveled the country several times to convene 25,000+ nannies, housekeepers, and caregivers in public spaces — libraries, transit stops, parks, playgrounds, farmers markets. Along the way we exchanged stories and created new resources including Know Your Rights toolkits including coloring placemats for kids with trickle up tips for their parents. To create these works, I collaborated w/ awesome lawyers at
@nationalemploymentlawproject @urbanjustice @brazilianworkercenter @mataharijustice @lydia4boston @northeasternlaw @pwcsc @chirla_org . Many of these works (art + tools) are still used such as the graphic I updated a month ago for
@cadomesticworkers ’ KYR handbook.
Together, works like these and the powerful leadership of 10,000 immigrant women have helped pass new laws to support the U.S.’s 2.2 million domestic workers in 9 states. Now on to a NATIONAL Domestic Workers Bill of Rights introduced in 2019 by Senators #kirstengillibrand (<lawyer) #BenRayLujan along w #PramilaJayapal. Support by #JoeBiden #kamalaharris (<lawyers).
Our artworks have been shown at the #WhiteHouse #UnitedNations, U.S. Dept of Labor and venues like #BrooklynMuseum (TY
