Iโm honored to begin a new chapter as a Kumu/Advisor at Namahana School in the North Shore of Kauaโi, where we grow rooted youth and community that care for โฤina through their interests, curiosities and gifts.
These photos are from a recent visit to Open Farms Retreat, as well as the Big Bang Gala celebration and on-campus training days at the Namahana School in Kilauea.
With gratitude to:
๐ฟAndrale and his daughter Sienna of Open Farms Retreat
@openfarmsretreat , for welcoming us with care and clarity of vision.
๐ฟ Alicia
@truthseekeralicia , 13th-generation Perry Clan Watuppa Indian, for sharing her familyโs story and deep connection to her homestead.
๐ฟ Darryl Black Eagle Jamieson
@blackeagleproductionsllc of the Pocasset Wampanoag Tribe of the Pokanoket Nation, for generously sharing his journey, leadership, and teachings.
๐ฟ Kirsty, โaina-kumu from Waipฤ, not pictured here but very present in spirit - thank you for the wisdom and grounding youโve shared with me during our time at Waipฤโs agricultural sites. Iโm grateful to be working closely with you and our โohana throughout the school year.
๐ฟ Pelika, an สปฤina kumu who has shared her deep philosophical and lived knowledge with our staff during training and ฤina Ulu days
๐ฟMehana Blaich Vaughan, whose book Kaiฤulu: Gathering Tides has offered me invaluable insight into the lands, histories, and communities of Kauaโi.
๐ฟ Taeko Onishi
@taeko_enso for all of your care and support during this major transition from RI to NYC to Kauai.
๐ฟ๐ฟ The entire Namahana team
@namahana.school and to all those who have generously shared their time and expertise with our staff during this time of learning and connection.
As we prepare to welcome students on August 4th, Iโm entering this work with humility, curiosity, and deep gratitudeโฆ
