We suspect most people have speculated about how they’ll meet their maker, but in this week’s Feature Video, JJerome87 (a.k.a. Alt-J frontman Joe Newman) throws us an absolute curveball. "I believe music videos should be potent and so to achieve this I set ideas for treatment within three principals; simple, striking and shocking,” says Joe. Seemingly, the video for his track ‘Brush Me Like A Horse’ does just that by depicting a morbidly bizarre scenario that starts to make way more sense with a little extra explanation. According to Joe, ‘Brush Me Like A Horse’ “is the story of a man slowly turning into a horse. This metamorphosis has the world around him forgetting who he is as people begin to care for him more and more like a horse. This song was inspired partly by something I'd seen a friend go through. They didn't turn into a horse, but their reputation went through a metamorphosis." “Joe Newman phoned me with an idea for his new track: a public execution via treadmill dangling over a cliff's edge” says the clips director Alex Takács. “It’s an absurd but super visceral image, and if you’re a treadmill hater like me, it immediately provokes a bodily sensation of being off balance. I find them unnatural and weirdly anti-human, so in other words, a perfect device to carry out a dystopian death sentence. "The shoot itself was particularly challenging due to a tight schedule, large set pieces, and high ambition. On our second, fully sun-baked day we started running into massive rattlesnakes everywhere around the mesa – it was like they were all simultaneously waking up after weeks of rain. We kept having to pivot and find new spots to shoot that lacked tall grass, but it was basically everywhere. His approach favors atmosphere over narrative, with a strong visual language shaped by memory, landscape, and the emotional charge of elements like water and fire. Alex tolds us about how locations often drive his concepts, returning to the same site until something clicks. Along the way, he shares esoteric references that have informed certain videos, like Butoh dance and the Tibetan Book of the Dead. He told us about his work with Sam Dew, Leon Vynehall, alt-J, Flying Lotus, and The xx, each video a response to the music, built through constraint, intuition, and a strong sense of mood.
