A green slope, a memory, and a stadium—this beautifully layered proposal reimagines Selman Stermasi Stadium not by erasing the past, but by cultivating it. Awarded second place in the international design competition, the project draws strength from the site’s quiet identity: the existing topography, mature trees, and the lived memory of generations of Tirana’s residents. Instead of turning the stadium into an isolated monument, the design softens its edges and opens its heart, proposing a UEFA Category 4 facility that grows organically from the landscape—a festive core embraced by nature and public life.
Around the stadium, a new urban neighborhood unfolds through a visionary approach the team calls Confetti Urbanism. It blends compact, low-tech buildings with rich ecological corridors, shaded playgrounds, water features, and civic plazas—creating a breathable, walkable, and vibrant park-city for all. From the tribunes to the rooftop promenade, from sculptural seats to the tilework inspired by Albanian textiles, every element expresses care, context, and imagination.
“The new stadium is composed by 3 different parts: the green slope with trees, the C-shaped tribune and a building cum cantilever. The barrier now separating the green perimeter from the city has to be removed, in order to turn the slope into a proper public asset. The buildings, which are defining and activating the public space, sport a quite compact footprint and are arranged in order to form a complex, surprising yet calm composition. Their confetti-inspired arrangement starts from rational decisions about light and shadow, land property, reciprocal distances, etc. but is then finalized by a recursive process of aesthetical refinement of the group form. The complex composition echoes the vitality of the city, its fascinating raw energy, in a distilled and metaphorical way. “
