JAMES HAMILTON’S ORIGINAL DISCO REVIEWS
Malcolm McLaren & The World’s Famous Supreme Team ‘Buffalo Gals’ (Charisma)
Record Mirror review Nov 1982
“A pity in a way that it’ll be this somewhat opportunist single which will make everyone aware of the New York DJs freaky ‘scratch’ gimmick (as on Mt Airy Groove), but this compulsively extraordinary clucking and smacking 108½ amalgamation of funk, rap and square dance (really!) is a mindblower regardless, with a less dense vocal mix plus a straight 135 square dance version (great party fun) on a 2-track flip.”

As the review illustrates, this was a seminal track in highlighting the emerging hip-hop movement of New York’s Bronx, not least the promo video, which, for the first time, exposed us to all four elements of hip-hop. It was the first video to show a DJ scratching, as well as the first to feature someone spinning on their head. ‘Buffalo Gals’ was culture shock!
Malcolm McLaren, the former manager of the Sex Pistols, was an unlikely champion of hip-hop, but the single was seminal, featuring NYC radio combo, the World’s Famous Supreme Team, and, in the video, launching b boys, the Rock Steady Crew, towards international fame.
‘Buffalo Gals’ and the album it heralded, ‘Duck Rock’, were produced by
@trevorhornmusic , who’d be right at the top of his game around this period, producing hits for ABC, Frankie Goes To Hollywood and Art of Noise. Recorded in the US, South Africa, Central and South America and the Caribbean, the LP was a mash-up of music styles like nothing before. It would spawn a further top 10 hit in ‘Double Dutch’, illuminating the rope skipping skills originated in Harlem.
We discussed ‘Buffalo Gals’ with our guest, Colin Curtis, during last month’s edition of the Record Mirror Disco Charts podcast (link in bio).
