What were your thoughts?
The word Tekina (also spelled Tequina) is a Taino word that refers to a teacher, leader, or a guide, specifically associated with those who instruct in the oral traditions and ceremonies of our people.
All members of the Yamaye Guani Council have titles of Tekina as culture bearers.
Happy Teachers Day to our Tekina's.

Yamaye Taino Day of Mourning, May 5th.
We do not celebrate May 5th as Taino day, for us it is a day of remembrance.
We Remember the impact of colonization
We remember the loss of our land and culture
We Remeber the attempted genocide of our people
We remember the resilience of our ancestors
We honor the sacrifices of our ancestors
We honor the teachings of our elders.
Because of them we are still here!
Yamaye Taino Yaka!

📢 **Official Statement from the Kalinago Council** ✊🌿
The Yamaye Guani Council is standing in support of our relatives in Waitukubuli (Dominica) as they release their official response to the ongoing mining operations at Deux Branches.
The Kalinago Council has raised urgent alarms regarding the safety, health, and sovereignty of their community:
Public Health Crisis: Reports reveal E. coli contamination and mercury and arsenic levels up to 500 times above WHO recommended limits in the Concord River.
Legal Violations: A "Stop Order" was issued in December 2025 because mining works "threaten and/or affected the health and safety of the public," yet efforts to proceed continue in violation of the law.
Lack of Transparency: Critical health information and Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIA) were withheld from the people most at risk.
Ancestral Rights: The Kalinago people have exercised traditional rights over these lands since time immemorial and demand to be consulted on developments that jeopardize their heritage.
The Concord River is a lifeline for the Kalinago people. We stand with Chief @Anette Sanford and the Kalinago Council in demanding immediate transparency, accountability, and respect for Indigenous rights.

Writes and Kulcha Remembers
April 12, 1963.
The Coral Gardens Massacre—Bad Friday happened all because a land dispute turned deadly, leading to 3 Rastafari men, 2 policemen and 3 civilians killed.
In that climate, the directive from then Prime Minister, Alexander Bustamante, rang out: “Bring in all Rastas, dead or alive.”
Over 150 Rastafari people were hunted, tortured, detained, and imprisoned. Their locs forcibly cut off.
Many fled and hid in nearby communities, including St Elizabeth, to escape torture and death.
Today, Sunday, April 12, 2026 is Road March Day in Kingston. Carnival in Jamaica fills the streets with big vibes and bright colours.
Woman and rum, wining non-stop… Freedom to chip down de road and bask in our joy, with or without locs.
Carnival, too, carries roots of resistance.
Same date. Same island. Different realities. Writes and Kulcha Remembers this dark day in history, even as we celebrate.

In case you missed it: As debate continues over Jamaica’s proposed national football jersey, a deeper question emerges. What happens when the global power of #reggae and #Rastafari symbolism intersects with the sovereign symbols of the Jamaican state?
In this column, Coleen Douglas (@cdpublicity ) reflects on the cultural tension between Brand Reggae and Brand Jamaica, exploring how music, identity, and national representation shape the way the country presents itself to the world.
