Remembering Pittsburgh’s Chinatown 🐉 | Now streaming on WQED+! It was a thriving part of downtown Pittsburgh, but not everyone knows the history of this tiny Chinese immigrant community once located between Grant and Ross Streets. The 1920s ushered in the beginning of its disappearance largely because of the construction of the Boulevard of the Allies and today the popular Chinatown Inn is the only significant remnant of a bygone era. In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, this documentary (along with many other Asian American local Pittsburgh stories) are now available to stream on WQED+ (wqed.org/plus)!

We were extremely saddened to hear of the passing of @pamelasdiner co-founder Gail Klingensmith this week. Gail was a beloved figure of a beloved Pittsburgh institution; her fellow co-founder Pam Cohen put it best: “Gail was the soul of P&G Pamelas diners. She was the one the Obamas loved. She was the one the employees loved. She was the one most of you loved. We would often tease her... ‘Everybody loves Gail.’ It would make her mad but it was the truth. I will miss my soulmate everyday until the day I die. We started the diners together 46 years ago , a lot of hard dirty work for many years but we did it together so it could be fun. Our number one rule, when we disagreed, was to defer to the other if it was important to them. Nothing was more important than our friendship. We made one complete businesswoman together. I would hide in the kitchen and she was the charm and personality. ‘Everybody loves Gail!’…and so do I.” Gail, thank you for helping bring your wonderful restaurants to Pittsburgh and for the even more wonderful memories we all made there. ❤️

We were extremely saddened to hear of the passing of our and @cbspittsburgh KDKA’s colleague, Dave Forstate. Dave was an amazingly talented photojournalist who had a hand in many of the works you’ve seen on WQED. He won an Emmy for 2024’s documentary “Equity on Ice: The Willie O’Ree Academy”, that he co-produced with Beth Dolinar; he also worked as videographer on “Violins of Hope: The Documentary”, was videographer on the WQED short documentary “The Aurora Reading Club,” and was an essential part of the studio team during tapings of several of the WQED Cooks programs hosted by Chris Fennimore. He will be sorely missed but his legacy will carry on through the amazing pieces he crafted throughout the years. Dave, thank you for all the wonderful stories and the even more wonderful memories. ❤️
