On good and bad mothers & high and low stakes existences: I agreed to be in my daughter’s short narrative film to be a good and supportive mother, and because I respect her so much, but I was pretty sure it was about a mother , who while not downright bad, was pretty oblivious to her daughter’s anxiety about leaving the nest and starting her first job, and who just wanted to get on with her own life gardening, vaping, and making baskets. I was surprised to hear my daughter speak about the concept in quite the opposite way on the @directorsnotes site where they’ve posted her film along with an interview with her. Turns out it’s an ode to a mother content in her own life at a time in life when many women feel at loose ends. Another shocker to me was the interviewer referring to the mother’s “low stakes existence”!! That’s not untrue and I can accept that! Working Summer is out today on @nobudge . I’m so excited to finally release Working Summer. I wanted to capture the admirable, fierce independence of my mom’s life, and to make a film that might help me reflect on what we expect from mothers. Deborah’s character in this film is fictional but her world and devotion to her work are very real. I’m so grateful for our tiny and powerful crew and cast. You guys are amazing — I feel so lucky to get to work with such lovely, kind, and talented people. It’s so special to get to work with friends and people you love. This was really a dream team, and I can’t wait to do it together again. And special shoutout to the wonderful Mike Bloom, who made every part of this happen.
