The Clearing at Lesnes Abbey Woods has been shortlisted for a RIBA London Award!
Within Zone 4 on the Elizabeth Line, The Clearing is built in an ancient woodland and next to a scheduled ancient monument. It meets the brief for an outdoor learning space and the community's hope for a more accessible woodland. Yet it respects the limits of this fragile ecosystem.
The making of The Clearing added tangible social value. 10% of the contract cost was a direct award to a volunteer group tackling mental health - through making. Contributions included the furniture, the carvings on the posts, the coppiced balustrades, and many other tools and fittings.
Being shortlisted for this Award is a great recognition of the successful collaboration between the contractor, volunteers, and the fantastic team at the London Borough of Bexley and WonKy.

Our low-impact, low-energy new house in a South London Conservation Area is now complete. Thank you to our builder @aib_contractors and all other consultants for making this possible on such a sensitive site.
@tbsbrick
Thank you @architectsjournal for organising the exhibition and inviting us to present The Clearing at the Small Projects Awards. It was great to see so many excellent projects showcased in one place. We are beyond pleased to be one of the winners alongside @oebarchitects@material_cultures and we know just how much this award means to the Abbey Wood's community involved in the making and running of the space.
At The Clearing, greenwood timber sourced from the woodland was used in the construction wherever possible; the shortest of supply chains! Lesnes Abbey Woods is a managed, sustainable resource for traditional crafts.

Throwback to our consultation day in May 2021. Through community engagement and close collaboration with stakeholders such as the amazing team at Our Creative Nature, North West Kent Countryside Partnership, London Borough of Bexley, and the great staff and volunteers at Lesnes Abbey Woods, we were able to deliver a much-needed new facility for the local residents in this beautiful ancient woodland.
